Alaska Inside Passage, Dawn Princess

In the evening, from the Dawn Princess along the Alaska Inside Passage. . .

I thought at first this was an instance of a superior mirage, which is caused by light refraction and may cause an image of an object
to appear lifted well above its actual position -- for example, a boat appearing to sail in the clouds.

After in-depth study by an expert, we have determined it is much more likely the result of fog creating a "false" horizon.
