Every year several snapping turtles travel from the nearby Canadian Mississippi River to lay their eggs, as this one is doing,
in the shoulder of the road that runs beside the river in this area. The shoulder of a road that has a fair bit of traffic on it
doesn't seem like the best place to lay eggs, but the turtles persist at it year after year.
Photographed near Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada.
