Atop the mound on the right is where Thomas Gann employed the not-so-tender method of dynamite excavation, a rather
common technique, according to Norman Hammond.

This mound was leveled for road fill in 2013. It was possibly unique in that it was a solid masonry structure, not masonry over rubble fill. A major loss.

Actually, the feature that was dynamited was the very top of the temple mound that was situated atop the "acropolis" pictured here. The mound is out of shot to the right. The pictured trench was dug by Royal Army Engineer backhoe under supervision by archaeologists in the winter of 1983. Pictured here are two archaeologists from Rutgers University conducting measurements of the "work gang" divisions visible in the masonry of this huge structure.
