In 1973, 74, and 78, Norman Hammond (then with Cambridge University) mapped the ancient Mayan site at NOHMUL. Hammond returned in 1982 to do a more intensive investigations at the site and surrounds.
Nohmul Project director Norman Hammond finished the work at the site in 1986 and moved his investigations to the neighboring sites of Cuello (until 1993) and eventually La Milpa (1992-2002), a large Classic period (AD 250-900) city in northwestern Belize. The La Milpa project had an international staff and received funding from the National Geographic Society and Boston University. .
Norman Hammond taught at Rutgers University from 1977-1988. In 1988, Dr. Hammond joined the Archaeology department at Boston University, where he eventually retired from teaching after the B.U. 2009-10 academic year at age 66.
