Tomatillos
0982

Looking like gift-wrapped green tomatoes, tomatillos add a tart flavour to dishes.
They are related to tomatoes, both are members of the solanaceae family. See Wikipedia for more information.

Tomatillos are a common ingredient in Mexico and the southwest of the U.S. Wonderful for making salsa and sauces for poultry, seafood and enchiladas. They have a bright tart flavor. When you peel the covering off, you will find them to be a bit sticky. Just rinse them off. Though they are sometimes referred to as "green tomatoes" they are a completely different vegetable (actually, a fruit!) They are related to gooseberries. Exceptionally beautiful photo! V.

Nice photo!! These are very common here in south Texas. They make a wonderful salsa when roasted and combined with cilantro, onions and serrano peppers. Restaurants compete for the best salsa verde or "green sauce". Here is a recipehttp://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/tomatillo_salsa_verde/

Thank you for this photo! Now I know how they look like, I was always wondering, they seem to be big. I taught they are smaller. Here we only get them canned, they are great as tomatillosauce with cilantro for mexican dishes!
