REtAiL Ireland

This is not the Ireland of the postcards or the tourism brochures or the tourist photos but it's very much part of Ireland of the 21st century.
Out of town retail parks have sprung up outside most large towns, unfortunately to the detriment of smaller family run businesses in the
old town centres. They mostly feature national and international stores and vary little from town to town.

Excellent storytelling.

in Australia there are a lot of these huge shopping centres,
I noticed that they are not that much in conflict with the local shop owners
but retail every where has some difficult times at the moment

We are all suffering from the look of these buildings which have no character and add nothing to our cityscapes. V

...and impact the local economy only in a trick down effect...

Yes, it is pretty much the same everywhere. Sad
laine17-Nov-2011 09:33
and we have exactly the same names here...boring places aren't they :)
Cindi Smith17-Nov-2011 04:05
Yeah, they are everywhere here. Wow, a KFC? Really? Reminder to self, if I visit another country, do not go into those kinds of stores....find the quaint family owned places....:)
Janice Dunn17-Nov-2011 01:14
Yes, I understand - it goes on here. Or shops close down and are taken over by certain types of shops.

That is going on everywhere!!! Lovely light in your photo Mairead!!!

I guess that transition happens everywhere although I hate to see it in such a fabulous country as yours where tourists flock every year. Beautiful light here makes these chain stores look inviting.

I miss the personalized, friendly service of small stores. Did you know that this year November 26 is Small Business Saturday?

Oh that is not good news. That is also going on here and has been for some time. Every small town has a Home Depot, a Wal-Mart, and all the fast food outlets. Meantime, the heart of the town dies, It is so sad. This is a really good documentary shot. V

Thanks for a look at the "other side" of Ireland. Good shot.

A slice of the 'modern' Ireland that tells a story of change - not always for the better. V
Stephanie16-Nov-2011 21:37
Tis the world of the chain stores.....
Sheila16-Nov-2011 21:33
Yes, this looks more like ours, and it's the same story, small business is losing out.

Excellent evening light in this journalistic style photo. Clever title too!
Mary Terry16-Nov-2011 19:21
Food places too! I spot a KFC in the distance...I wouldn't expect to find Kentucky Fried Chicken in Ireland.
