The Marshes

This is The Marshes, Dundalk's biggest and newest shopping centre. Opened during the height of Ireland's boom it was immediately loved by shoppers and loathed by architects. It's a pastiche of styles from the town's old buildings, so there's bits of the railway station, the courthouse, the brewery all meshed together. It houses a mixture of shops, mostly well known names, and still enjoys plenty of footfall although business has slowed. It has also attracted shoppers away from the main streets were many shops have closed in recent years.

I like that it fits in with the town architecture. Our local shopping centres are modern monstrosities. Such a shame about the little shops though. There wont be any left soon.

I like this old building....it has a lot of history in it. Hopefully, it will stay open and prosper.

Agree with Stephanie and Scott.

At first glance I thought it was old, but your interesting historical perspective says it took styles from other old structures. The problem is if it does not remain open (like some of those Walmarts Stephanie mentioned) then you don't have any stores left.

It may be an eclectic mix of styles but it does look like it's from another century. Very nice capture of this controversial mall.

It is quite attractive, far more so than the ugly strip plazas here, or the concrete boxes that we call malls! I might even go into this one, though normally I avoid malls. V

We have a bunch of similar shopping centers here. Nice capture!

This scene looks like an old building. I always hate to hear about small businesses losing out.

Very nice photo of this shopping centre.

I just wish there was a way that new shopping centers and the mom and pop stores could find a way to exist together. Unfortunately, we see a lot of the small shops closing in towns when Walmart moves in... :(

I was in Ireland in 1999 and was amazed at the amount of new houses (very large new houses) being built. And shopping centres too.
The new malls do a lot of damage to the old towns, with many shops having to close.
