They say that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. This sculpture of a hand by artist Linda Brunker is situated outside the Department of Education buildings in Dublin. Ireland has a long history of cherishing schools and learning, going back to preChristian times. Recent ministerial decisions announcing stringent cutbacks in financial arrangements for schools do not seem to underline our constitutional aim of cherishing the children of the nation.
