I love that old semaphore arm signal just like the older series of Thomas the Tank Engine when narrated by Ringo Starr and George Carlin.

I lived in Sheerness and went to school at Borden Grammar School in Sittingbourne. This meant a return trip to Sittingbourne over the old bridge by all the boys and girls from Sheppey based who attended the two Sittingbourne grammar schools.

The new big concrete road and rail bridge was built alongside the old one and that had a central, horizontal lifting span to allow ships destined for the paper mills to pass beneath it. That too had been replaced by the next time I visited the island and there is now a huge flyover for road traffic. I don't recall seeing what they did with the railway line! I think it would have been cheaper to dredge the other half of the Swale (the stretch of sea water separating Sheppey from the mainland.

I hve to wonder if the bloke up the signal is carrying out emergency signalling duties, as the signal is "clear" for trains travelling in the opposite direction to the one coming towards the camera!

Who's the bloke up the signal?

This bridge used to get hit by ships regularly. One of my early memories is having to go up to Chatham by tugboat as the bridge was out of order. We then picked up the bus service to London, where I used to stay with my family. If this bridge closed in 1959, I must have been around eight at the time.
