Just caught up with this site. I went to Airedale School from 1944 to 1947 and absolutely adored Mrs Rooke. My sister and brother went to school in Queenborough where Mr Rooke was headmaster. I think Mrs Rooke had 100% success in her pupils passing the 11 plus. We lived in Minster Road with Bob Grimer who ran the M&D bus company. My mum was a "clippie" during the war and both my brother and sister later worked at the Sheerness East depot. Used to love the sheerness carnivals and took part in a couple on the M&D floats. We used to go to a cafe in Sheerness called Bacca's for a real treat. Is anyone out there old enough to remember it!!

Hello, I met my wife in 1961 at a coffee bar called The Oasis located at the beach in Leysdown. Our oldest son is taking us back to where we first met as a Wedding Anniversary. Unfortunately, the cafe no longer exists and as far as we gather it was changed to a mini market that also no longer exists. Do any postcards/photos exist or anybody with a very long memory record. The tourist organisation and local councils say they have never heard of it. Be happy, Gordon Green

Does anyone know what happened to the large White house - more like aMansion I believe, that was situated on land above Warden Point, possibly it would have been in the area of 'Springhills'? Caravan Park. It was clearly visible from Leysdown itself in the 50s and 60s but after that I can't say. It may well have fallen when the cliff subsided as it was 'abandoned' well before. I do remember it at that time and myselfand friends passed it in about 1963 when we walked via the cliffs to Sheerness which WAS possible around that time.

YW. I've just stumbled across this site and love what I see. I lived on the Harps estate from 1950 to 1960 when we had to move to Portsmouth when the dock yard closed. I went to Minster Primary school and remember many of the teachers there. Miss Rule Mr Arnold Mr &Mrs Collins Mr Davies Mrs Hughes Miss Greenstreet. All lovely people but my little heart belonged to Mr Tunstall. Does anyone know some of the following names from my schooldays and what they are doing now? Hi I used to visit the old Warners Holiday Camp back in 1970 - 1972. I was Thirteen at the time. My uncle was the head chef there. We used to spend most of my summer holidays from school there. I used to help out in the kitchens. My uncle used to give me tasks to complete, I remember him letting me make the small individual trifles, and then going out into the dinning room to let everyone know that I'd made them. We lived and still do in Deal, my uncle told me off in 1971 because I had cycled all the way there from Deal. He wouldn't let me cycle back, he put me on the train. It's a pity the old camps gone, I loved it there. Alas my uncle has passed away since then back 1n 1984, His name was Ronnie Bamford in case anyone doe's remember him.

Hi, My grandmother was born in Blue Town in 1889. Her mother died at aged 32 (1898) and an Inquest was held into her death at 'The Duke of Clarence Hotel" I have a transcript of the file but would like to know where, or if, I could find anymore information. I have tried British Newspaper Archives but they don't hold Sheerness Times & Advertiser. Thanks.

Hello there, Trying to trace a public house in Sheerness where my mother in law lived. The family name was COUPE. She was born in 1914 and married in Sheppy in 1937. Its a long shot but have just had a new baby named after her Molly although her registered name was Florence she had a sister Blanche and a brother George.

I haven't looked at this site for a good while but I have just seen a comment from 'Guest' posted 28th October 2015 regarding the old Airedale School building and asking for photos. Yes, I do have some; they are mainly of my mother, her brother Garth (died in 1953), my grandparents Lilian and Alva Rooke and my great grandparents. However, there are some images of the house; two come to mind of the front of the house with the school signs. I don't really want to publish my email address but if there is a way to share that via site moderator, I am happy to oblige with pdfs of the images. For anyone who remembers my mother Anne Rooke, she is still painting and teaching art when she can.

I think the pictures are great location went to airdale private school all those years ago and have found a picture that was taken in the Orchard when all the blossom was on the trees we used to wears straw boater and grey and white stripped dresses with a white bow in the summer and burgundy blazers and black hats with a ribbon round in the winter oh those days were great

Dear Yvonne Hayter (nee Taylor) Episode 5 Whilst not a pupil at Airedale School, I remember Mrs Rooke and her daughter, and some 18 months ago, corresponded with Anne Rooke's daughter on one of Trevor Edwards' Isle of Sheppey websites. I knew some children who attended Airedale, on the corner of Glenwood Drive; they included Russell Carlson, my first childhood friend (I was told he'd passed away (Cancer, in the early 1980's, though how accurate that is, I do not know), and Dr Hamish Wylie's children. As for you going to the convent in 1954, I remember food rationing coming to an end in that year, and going to the cinema (The Ritz) with my parents to see the film Beau Brummel starring Elizabeth Taylor and Stewart Granger. I became a pupil at the convent in late 1955, but my time there was dolorous and I could not wait to leave in 1966. As you probably know, the school was sold around 1992 and has been turned into a small housing development. You may also know Madame Anselm passed away, I think, in the 1980's, also Cancer. I remember you taking part in the 1958 production of Midsummer Night's Dream in which you played one of the tradesmen/strolling players of Athens. Episode 6 to come.

Dear Yvonne Hayter (nee Taylor) Episode 4 Both my mother and I thought your mother was a most attractive lady who looked very elegant on horseback. The last time I saw her, circa 1962, on a warm day in summer, she was on a horse and with other riders returning to your stables Whybornes Chase (not sure my spelling of Whybornes is correct). Of course, not a few ladies/girls on the island were keen riders; perhaps, you remember Moira de Lacey, the doctor's daughter and a convent school girl, kept her horse, Kildare, in a field opposite Scocles Court? Also, Carol Marsh, another convent school girl (I think her family farmed on the island), Mick Bolter/Judge (now married to Ken Ingleton), and Angela Fray (nee Hale). When very small, I remember horse shows being held on Sheppey, and my parents knew a girl named Jean Weir, a farmer's daughter from the Dover area, who brought her horses to the event. Though, not greatly interested in horses, I had a few lessons from Mrs Millard at her stables in Eastchurch, close to the church, as mentioned on Trevor Edwards' Eastchurch website. Dear Yvonne Hayter (nee Taylor) Episode 3 As said, we first met in 1952, and during that era, my parents attended Christmas parties at your home. If you had a piano, and of that, I am not sure, it is likely my mother played the instrument; something, I still do, much as your mother gave you a love of horses and taught you to ride. At one of the parties, I can even remember what I wore; a red velvet skirt and short sleeved white blouse with red stitching. Maybe, my mother bought it at The Kiddies' Store on Sheerness High Street, or a shop on Broadway (just down from Humphreys - baker and snooty café - where so-called Sheppey 'society' met for cream cakes and slagging off sessions) that also sold clothes for children. One Christmas, Uncle Alf and Aunt Marjorie gave me a small doll, made of a china texture as opposed to plastic, and dressed in a cherry red jumper, trousers and hat. Unfortunately, I never played with dolls, but, kept it for a very long time. Even now, I can remember my mother saying one 26 December, 'Oh, Alf has gone to a football match'. Did Sheerness have a team? That's it for now, in case I type too many words, but episode 4 to follow.

Dear Yvonne Hayter (nee Taylor), Episode 2 We first met in 1952 when I was 4 years old. Our parents knew each other, and I well remember, as a very small child coming up to the stables. Your garden/lawn were on the left, with the stables on the same side, further ahead, before I walked up to a gate, behind which was a paddock/field with jumps. Behind that and slightly to the right was a small copse that frightened me a little as it seemed dark and spooky, but, such are small children; behind that copse was The Glen. I also remember a local proliferation of Foxgloves, in season, especially, when waking along a small pathway that was reached, when leaving your property, by turning left, then sharp left to climb a slightly steep area. As the level settled, walking back to Minster, I could look down towards a good view of your property on the left. I had forgotten, if, indeed, I ever knew, the name, Casita, and it is lovely you still live there, as the late Angela Fray (nee Hale [another convent schoolgirl])lived at Scocles Court until her death in 2015. I will try to send Episode 3 tomorrow.

reference to Jo 21.0113. her mother Anne Rooke had her caravan on my father's land Taylors riding School she also rode here.She spent many hours with us. I still live on the site but no longer run a riding school, but still have horses - shires I have one of Anne's painting of my mothers stallion Kismet hanging proudly in Casita. I was also a pupil at Airedale School until l954 when I too went to the convent.

Hi TonyG, I'm a Goodwin, born in Minster Hospital and lived in Wheatsheaf Gardens in Sheerness. My grandparents moved to First Avenue in 1919, I think, when my grandfather, who was in the Army, was posted to Garrison Point. My dad went to Borden Grammar, then joined the RN - to get away from Sheerness - but his last posting before he retired was as Officer-in-Charge Wildfire Building before it closed. I remember being asked as a child if I were related to a Susan (I think) Goodwin who was from a farming family on the Island. I haven't managed to track down a relationship though.

Please does anyone remember a musical production put on by Danley pupils in the 1970s. It was all about Sheppey and featured a song sung as if by the Abbey, called "here I stand looking o'er the estuary"? and a really haunting song sung by one of the girls about being buried somewhere on the Island?.... I believe my great grandfather Charles Loe (wife Millicent) were originally from the Isle of Sheppy. My grandfather was Sydney George Loe who at his time of death lived in Bulford Village, Salisbury area. Evening M-FC, I do not remember any of the names that you mention.Between 1948 and 1956 ish I lived at 'Dunrobin' a little bunglow down Seathorpe Ave.We then moved to 105 Noreen Ave, a brand new Council house complete with a bathroom. Other names that I remember Terry Miller, Penny Crane, Lorna Green, Henry Fitzgerald. Teachers at Minster Primary - Miss Rule, Mr Arnold ( used to throw things at children ) Mr Tunstall Head Master.

Thinking on it, as I have, I am sure the Russells lived at 22 Bramston Road, and for I know, some may still be on the island. Otherwise, you say you went to Minster Primary School, so, perhaps, the name Peter Harcup and Joan Frost are familiar to you? Also, you may have known a boy named Ian Cox who lived just opposite my former home at 368 Minster Road? Otherwise, if you type in, say, 368 Minster Road Google, you can get on to the road, and if you have the patience, follow it up towards Minster Village. Along the way is your old school, though it now seems to be a 'gentrified'/residential complex. I do remember going to the school as I was press-ganged into joining the Guides who held their weekly meetings there; yikes, they were dreary. Also, the row of, presumably, Victorian terrace houses just opposite, have long gone. In fact, it is quite a shock to see some of the changes, but, that's life. If the Tudors could come back to Minster, given those changes, can you imagine the impact on them?

As you probably know, Trevor Howland, there were three Russell brothers, namely, Freddie, Johnny and Reggie, they were very dark haired, and lived in Bramston Road on the Harps Estate. Having left the island a while back, I do not know what became of them. However, if you look at Trevor Edwards' Sheppey People Photo Gallery Website, you will see a photograph of Sheerness Secondary School in 1962. I may be wrong (and indeed, previously confused Andrew Hartley [a boy in the photograph] with Maurice Rand), but, would the boy on the left in the top row, or the boy on the far left in the front row, be one/two of the Russell brothers

I am doing research into soldiers who were on the original WW1 memorial at Marylebone station, London. I'm trying to find living relatives for each soldier on the memorial to attend a ceremony at Marylebone station next April when a new memorial is to be dedicated. I'm searching for relatives of William Leslie Howes who was a clerk at Marylebone. He was born at Sheerness approx 1899 and was the son of William and Ellen Howes of 28 Solent Road, West Hampsted, London. He was killed in action on 16th April 1918, at the age of 19 and is remembered at Tyne Cot Memorial. Hi Marie Mum and Dad moved to the Marquis of Lorne, in Mill Road Gillingham in 61/62. I was in the navy, stationed in Scotland. Only went back for weddings and funerals! Now only one cousin left on the island. Me? Married with three children, seven grandchildren, living in Weymouth. Been here since 1980. Olive's husband was Jack, a very 'regular' customer to the pub. The Whitings lived at 44, Graham was my age, he had an older brother, cannot remember his name.

I have a photo of her and me holding hands the day we went off to Alexander Rd infants. Colin was her younger brother. The fish n chip shop was run by the co-op when I was young, I remember Mum's number was 5097!! Do you remember the Woods, Barry and Michael. Their Dad had the greengrocery business, in the big house about seven doors down on the right hand side of the flood photo? We lived at no.5 till about 1960 andmy name was Browning. Do you remember the fish and chip shop opposite us. Mr Thistle and his family ran it. Their daughter was julie and she was about my age. My older brother bob used to help out in the shop with the potatoes for making chips. My best friend was lynn firth who lived at number 9. When we were 11 she went to aUstralia and I never heard from her again. I think of her often.

Can't wait to show these photos to my Dad. His name is Terence Parsons, and he was evacuated to Sheppey with his parents., his Dad worked for the local council. They initially lived at King's Clare (sp?), then moved to 1 Warden Terrace, Chequers, later moving to 4 Albert Terrace, and lastly to Four Gables (midway between Chequers and The British Queen). His (much) younger brother David was born, I think, on the island. Terry attended the Seondary Modern, while I believe David attended the Grammar. Dad moved away to join the RAF in around 1952, but still visited the islands for several years as his parents stayed for a while longer. He has fond memories of making camps with his friends at Bell Farm Cliffs, and says he loved Strawberry Woods.

Yes, there was a small sweetshop on the left hand side as you went down Minster Hill. It was situated on the corner by the road that runs around the back towards Scocles Road, and stood opposite The Prince of Waterloo public house. I do not remember the name of the shop, but, it was run by a Mrs Griffiths who had black hair with a rigid middle parting and gave the impression of being a veritable pillar of the community. Another shop, also on the left on the way down, was run by Mr and Mrs Kerry (butchers). Mr Kerry was very lean and dark haired with a 'spiv' style moustache, whilst his wife, a blonde, was larger, and kept a yapping poodle. Otherwise, the Newsagent in the village was originally run by a Mr and Mrs Robertson before the Feltons took over, whilst Mrs Thomsett ran the fish shop, Mr Hodges was the greengrocer, Mr Roberts had a grocery shop, and there was also a hardware shop, a junk shop and even a small jewellery shop by the side of the huge set of stone stairs that led/lead down to the lower road. Plus, three pubs,a hairdresser and one of the Ingletons ran a post office as you left the village and headed for Eastchurch.

Just on this subject, does anyone know the origin of the Zulus in the Sheerness Carnival? Is it something unique to Sheerness? I remember in the fifties an sixties, when the Navy were still in town, they took on this job, and used to land on Sheerness beach in longboats (very authentic!) and terrorize everyone on the beach. They may even have carried a few people off in the boats, but I am not completely sure on that one. On Youtube there is a Leysdown carnival, and they seem to have Zulus too.

I guess carnivals are not meant to be renowned for intellectual depth,but having looked at Sheerness Carnivals (Youtube), even with the brain of a caterpillar one would die of boredom. As an alternative, try Hitler is upset at Tesco Sheerness. Despite the language, it has its moments.

If you go to Youtube and search "Sheerness Carnival", two will come up. The first is from 1973/74, and is not too bad. The second is from 2013, and is horrible. No Zulus (I suppose they are politically incorrect nowadays) no marching bands, and the whole thing set to funeral music. I'm surprised they did not have the carnival queen wearing a high visibility jacket. It was an absolute travesty of the carnivals I remember in the sixties. I've been out of the country for too long, and my memories seem to be through too thick rose colored glasses.

Jo I was at Airedale and I remember that your mother used to run an art club there for a while which I attended with some of my sisters - I must have been very young but I remember your mother saying I should go on to study textile design. With reference to Ted Wood's mentioning the Boom Defence store, I do remember it well. It was known as 'The Boys' in my time (early 1950's) because it consisted of a vast store of moorage equipment. I lived in St. Georges Avenue and the area was approached down the dirt track New Road and over the railway foot bridge which placed you right in the middle. The footpath then led through to come out on what is now Brielle Way but then was a quiet road alongside the sea wall with Westminster a short walk further on. I recall doing 'Superman' leaps from the top of the double decker main channel buoys down onto coils of hawser wire which broke the fall! The PC people would no doubt now be horrified but in those days, life was much more interesting for the young!

I am now 71, born Minster hospital 1942, lived 1 The Crescent opposite the clock, went to Rose St School, Jefferson Road School, Tech School - left home at 16 and joined RAF. I was searching www for a photo of the Boom Defence store near to the sports field/railway line New Road, Sheerness - I used to play there approx 1950. Does anyone remember it - have a photo? I went to Airedale School in the late 70's. I remember Mr and Mrs Rook very well along with lots of fond memories of playing rounders on the field, the sink on the playground with the plastic cups for a drink of water and lining up to wash your hands in the kitchen before lunch. I also remember always volunteering for litter picking when it was time to read aloud from the bible once a week. One of the best things was the girls summer uniform, I remember spinning around and around sending the skirt flying out on the sides and the straw hat. However, I was never picked to take Mrs Rooks tea upstairs to her and I was desparate to see the upstairs of the house. When I left there I went onto Danley Middle School which I found a huge shock after Airedale and I didnt cope very well. We moved away in my second year at Danley and I was given the chance of a fresh start which I embraced wholeheartedly!

My name is Adrian Waller. My grandmother was Alice Waller. She lived with my grandfather at Redcot, Bell Farm Lane, Minster, long before caravans arrived. She later moved to Coronation Road, Sheerness. I, meanwhile, worked as a Times Guardian reporter, but left Sheerness (I lived at 22 Alma Road) in March, 1963. Message to Jo (we corresponded briefly earlier in the year when I wrote in to say I remembered Airedale, the old coach your mother used as studio etc). I have just read you are moving to Ontario. Yikes it is a long way to move and you seem very brave. Have visited that great country three times, and once took a train from Toronto to Jasper, before taking the bus into Vancouver; great fun to stop at Edmonton, Saskatchewan and the other towns you read about in the geography books at school as a little girl. If you have not done the train journey, it is fantastic, and Jasper is one of the most peaceful places I have ever visited. I am sure returning to Sheppey to visit The Glen, Harty Church and, of course, Airedale, will be emotional and though you are moving far away, I hope that does not stop you from commenting in the future on Trevor Edwards' great website. The name Sally Porter is ringing a memory bell with me. As a very little girl at my grandmother's school, Airedale, am I right in remembering one of the older children as Sally Porter? On another note, and having seen that there is a distinct Canadian theme to some of these comments, I too am moving to Ontario, Canada (depending on house sale) in the next month. I am planning a visit to Sheppey before I go, particularly to see the old Airedale, Harty Church Minster and the Glen.

Hi, I came across the site while looking for some old pictures. My Mum lived grew up on Sheppey and lived Croindene (228) Minster Road. Her name is Sandra Porter. She had three sisters, Christine, Gill and Sally. Also she attended Airdale school between 1957 and 64. She says she can remember vividly playing cricket on the field and the two seesaws. Nicky Dixon and her would get the big seesaw. Was anyone else there at this time.

In response to M-F C: You are quite right, the bus was green and it may well have been Mr. Kite's land; I do remember the name. My brothers and I often played in the Glen. They are the artistic ones, both having followed my parents to the Royal College of Art, where my parents met,and now both are enjoying successful careers as a sculptor and a designer. Mum and Dad were married at Harty Church in 1959 and Mum had to live in a caravan, parked near the church, for a few weeks to qualify as 'resident of the parish'. I have no artistic tendencies but my oldest son is now also at the Royal College of Art. I will add a comment to the Harty site but my mother's paintings have frequently been of landscapes across Kent although Sheppey certainly was my mother's first inspiration.

When I read your first email (13.01.13), apart from remembering the facts I included in my response re Airedale School, something 'clicked' way back in my mind that went, 'Yes, I remember the grown ups (probably Mrs Carlson, Mrs Dixon, and certainly, my mother) chatting and mentioning your mother was an artist, and that Harty connection', which is why I asked if she had painted there. Upon reading your email (21.01.13)in which you mentioned the bus, yes, there was another click. I do remember that bus and it was parked, as you say, at the top of Glenwood Drive, and I am sure, just opposite a small bungalow covered with pebble dash before one walked into The Glen. I am also sure it was a single decker, and possibly khaki green, but, will stand corrected on the colour. I had not realised it was an artist's studio and how very enterprising of your mother. As for the local farmer, I wonder if it was Mr Kite? I am impressed that two of your mother's works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, and despite barely knowing a paint brush from a palette, I attend odd exhibitions, visiting the Holbein exhibition at The Tate in 2006 (you may know his portraint of Henry VIII was loaned by the Thyssen Museum (Madrid), along with a Jane Seymour from Vienna, and their child Edward from Washington DC, and it is believed that was the first time all three pictures had been hung together in centuries); the Van Dyke exhibition (also at the Tate), and the Royal Academy last year to see an exhibition of Zoffany. Do you paint? Otherwise, Trevor Edwards, the gentleman who has put the Sheppey website together, has done wonders, and did you know there are a series of sites about the island; e.g. Leysdown, Minster, Eastchurch, Warden, and, of course Harty. Given your mother's connections, it might be fun to add a comment to the Harty site?

In response to M-F C: yes, my mother, Anne Rooke, did several paintings at Harty and across the whole island. Indeed, I have one on the wall of my study as I type this. She had use of an old bus which I think belonged to a local farmer and which was parked on land adjacent to the Glen at the top of Glenwood Drive; she took out the seats and turned it into a studio. It was still there when I was a child. Other than that, she has painted scenes from across Kent, Northern Italy, Greece and the South of France. On two occasions, her Sheppey paintings were in the Royal Academy exhibition.

The comment by a lady named Jo certainly, 'Rings Bells with me'. As a little girl, I lived further up Minster Road at number 368 that, in those days, was a police house, and I still have many pictures of that time. Although, I was not a pupil at Airedale School, a little boy I knew, Russell Carlson, who lived at 372 Minster Road, was a pupil at Airedale, before going on to Borden Grammar. I understand he passed away in the early 1980's. Yes, I knew the Dixon girls, Anne, Isabelle, Nicky and Linda (Fiona was a later addition) and used to play at their farm at the end of Oak Lane. I also knew Susan Love who was a fellow pupil at the convent in Sittingbourne. Other Airdale pupils may have included Dr Hamish Wylie's children. I did not know Mrs Rooke, but, knew who she was, and remember seeing her outside the school which, I think, was on the corner of Glenwood Drive. I also remember Anne Rooke and the fact she was an artist seemed very exciting to residents in Minster Road. Did she ever paint scene out at Harty?

Just stumbled across this site researching another topic entirely! My grandmother was Lilian Rooke who ran Airedale School and my grandfather was Alva Rooke, Headmaster of Queenborough School; I spent much of my childhood with my grandparents and attended the school. I noticed a post asking about the school - it closed in 1986 when my grandmother finally retired. Grandad died later that year and Nana died in 1987. Their son, Garth, was killed flying with the RAF Auxillary Air Force while a student at Cambridge in June 1953. His sister Anne, my mother, went to Medway Art School and then onto the Royal College of Art; she has since enjoyed a very successful career as an artist. Now I am back in my time at the school, names of students such as Clive Connelly, Christine Revelly, Shawn and Janet Spurrier, Tony Beedell, Teehan Page and the Dixon/Love family at Horseshoe Farm come to mind. Ring bells with anyone?

I went Alexandria Rd School, then primary school can't remember the name then went to Sheerness Secondary School from 1961 to 1965.I played rugby for Sheppey and was heavy into cycling there were a lot of write up's about me in the Guardian. hello,my name is bill and I worked at warners holiday camp,minster,for 2 seasons in 1956/7. Our camp used to enter a large float in the summer carnival held in sheerness.I remember one year several of the staff dressed up as roman soldiers and our camp maintenance built a huge wooden horse for the parade. I was born in Sheerness in 51 and left in 72. Such great memories looking at these pics - Methodist youth club, Tin chapel youth club at Halfway, attempted underage drinking at the Britannia and peeking into the Cellar Club. I travelled to the Grammar School from 64 after going to Rose Street. Fantastic site for ageing Swampies.

I have just found this website and it has brought back memories of childhood holidays spent in a chalet in Leysdown in the mid 50's. I cant remember the name of the camp but it had concrete block shared toilets which later progressed to the owner of the chalet we stayed in building a toilet onto the side of the chalet. I was scared to go in there as always had Daddy Long Legs! I have marvellous memories of kite flying with my dad in the field behind the chalet and one night a terrific thunderstorm with rain pelting down on the corrugated roof of the chalet and getting into bed with mum who was scared stiff of the lightening.

Hi does anyone remember the sweet shop in Alexandra Road Sheerness. My two sisters and I used to buy sweets from the shop after going to Sunday School at the Ebenezer Chapel in the same road. I would interested in anyones memories of the "threpenny hop" dance club I used to attend at the Conservative club in Sheerness we took our pop records in and they were played in between us having to take part in a barn dance, march of the mods, the vallitta dance? and many of the standard ballroom type dances in the 60s. Anther memory is of the raft which was anchored by a chain off the beach in the water at the top of Alexandra Road many happy summer days I remember swimming out to it. Has anyone any photos of the raft please?

I do remember the technical high school for boys, I was at the tech'high school for girls '60 to 65.... Purple and yellow uniform (yuck) Cloche hats and boaters in the summer (yuck yuck) Lived at Tunstall nr Sittingbourne and travelled each day by bus /train/bus. Front half of train was for the tech boys back half for the girls with public in the middle. Chaos rained at Queensboro station as girls and boys ran up and down the platform to jump into the opposite sexes carrrieges....good fun but agree absolutely the worst days of my life. EXCEPT the snow of 1963 (much worse than the 80's) off school for 7 weeks ! Great Pictures by the way.

hi my name is martin smith. i lived on the island most of my life.it was a great place to live.. unlike now..my school was rose st primary then sheppey school for boys. the head master was mr smart.. music was mr whale. i will never for get the time our sience teacher blew himself up in front of the class.. fond memorys..i lived in bluetown when i was born in 1949.. we then moved to short st next to poppys coal yard..wooden houes 2 up 2 down. no hot water. tin bath. toilet at the bottom of the garden. then we moved to first av sheerness. from ther i left home at 18. then moved of the isle when i was 32.. istill feel im coming home every time i go over the bridge...i have seen 3 bridges in my life now..

Great Web site! My late mother, Shirley (Pierce) Rizler, born 1934, was raised in Sheerness. I have visited the island twice in my lifetime and it's lovely. My mother kept many photos and postcards of Sheppey and I remember her stories of the flooding that occurred, along with her childhood memories of WWII while living on the island. She was a Korean war bride, marrying my father, Richard Ritzler, and came to the US in the early 1950's. My Aunt Mary Hayes still resides in Sheppey.

I have just come across this site while researching my family tree. I lived in Sittingbourne but attended Sheerness Tech until I left in 1960 to join the RAF. Now, many years later and after a couple of tours overseas, I live near Gatwick Airport. I have read some of the recollections about the Tech - I remember Mr Kitkat very well. I also remember Mr (Bill) Barnett who someone mentioned. I was there from 1955-1960 and have been trying to recall some of the other teachers there. I can remember Luland, Hutley, Lifton, Macarthur, Holt, Ryder, Hawkes and Ducy but there are several whose names I have forgotten (one was known as Algy because his initials were L G, but I cannot recall his surname). Twice during that time the King's Ferry Bridge (the old one) got hit and stuck in the up position and we had to go home by tug from Sheerness Dockyard via Gillingham. Still, at least we got a week off school each time.

I love the isle of Sheppey, it was our holiday place when me and my sister were children,we wernt told that we were going until just the day before as we would get far too excited,when,we would pack up all our things in our dads old red cortina and off we set, when we clapped eyes on the bridge,well the excitment was so intense,the first place that came to mind was Leysdown,begging our parents to go there first, we would always have to stop at the halfway house so that dad could have a pint,we had to go in the childrens room it was great.we would somehow find the old caravan that we had booked for the week,it was always a bit meldew but we didnt care,then straight to Leysdown to the arcades and bumper cars, paddling in the see and looking for crabs.It was brilliant..My mum has just recently moved to Minster and loves it , my aunt and uncle have had several caravans on the island since the 1960s they now have a chalet in eastchurch.I often go and stay with my mum and love it ....

I lived on Sheppey between 1955 and 1973 before being whisked off to Melbourne where I still live. I have so many precious memories of my childhood there and how free to roam and healthy we were despite sleeping in damp houses and the lack of daily showers! As a child in Queenborough, summers were spent walking my dog Tim from the Creek to Bluetown or sitting for hours in a tree that hung over into High St and watched the continual flow of super-quirky Q'bro-ites. After moving to Minster, winter hols were spent at the Reeds Farm in Parsonage Chase and summer at the beach ALL day with a bottle of water, a jam sandwich and a few bob for an icecream. Perfick! I then spent 4 years at Rochester Art College '68-72. While living on the Thames Lighter barge that was moored in The Creek I was married at Q'bro Church and quite a crowd was gathered outside due to a rumour that the bride would be wearing jeans! (I was somewhat 'alternative' at the time). I am returning to Shep next month for the 10th time and despite all the changes and loss of 'green space', for me, it still feels like my home.

For a number of years I have been trying to trace my dad, his name is Alan John Davis and his last know address was 72 James Street, Sheerness, it says on my birth certificate that he was a painter, I do not have any more info on him, only his name and the address, I was born in 1957 and lived at the above dress with my brother Roydon, dad and mam who's name was Hilda, she died when i was nine in 1966, i was brought up by my gran up north who wouldnt tell me anything about my dad. My parents Eileen and John Walker had the very first house in harps avenue (No. 83)straight after the war, I have many fond memories of my life there and the great fun we had playing on scocles farm, after this we moved to leysdown where my father worked in the amusement trade. I now live in Dymchurch, but we pay many a visit to my old haunts (bunny bank, minster cliffs, the abbey plus many others) I wonder what has happened to my many friends that I had, and hope that they are all well. hello it is matthew again i told my friend connor about it and we all went down the hole apart from adam because he was going out that day on the 3rd of augest 2008 first connor went down then me then taylor. when we all was down there we was going to look round the corner because we had a torch. but when we all was about to look round the corner........ we all got abit scared of what was behind there,and we all thought we saw something move round the corner so we got out and just tried to make the hole bigger but it did not work much because we only have a hammer. but today i threw the hammer into the cenal because a police car drove past sloley so we all ran out of that erea,and we ran across the road but that probally made us all looking suspictious to the police but when i looked round the corner again the police went to the park for a different reason. my freind adam told me that the other bomb shelter or air raid shelter got fully filled with cement a few days back and that the council are going to fill the other one we found up in a couple of days or weeks what shall we do???? do you think we can get them not to cement it all up??? and maybe ask if they could make it into a little underground play erea for people??? what do you think about it all........

hello my name is matthew and i have two friends called adam and taylor. we was walking along behind my house and we had a little base. it was just an area where there was a gap of trees so we usauly hang out there. but on the second of augest 2008 we went there and there was some concrete at both ends which we knew about, but when we went there on that day there was a hole in each sides of the concrete i am twelve adam is twelve and taylor is eleven. there was a small hole in one end and a big hole in the other end,(just enougth room for us to get down there) but we did not go down there.it was an air raid shelter from world war 2. and we saw a mask down the big hole so i went home and got me fishing net,i plled the mask out and it was burnt on the back we looked at the tree next too the hole and there was realy bad scratch marks on it that no knife ir tool could do so we went up the hill and chucked it in the cenal.we went back down and we looked at the edges of the hole and it looked like something got out from the shelter but..... it has been all concreted up for at least 66 years and we are trying to make the hole bigger so we could go down there.... would it be safe???? what do you think it was???/or who?? and when i last looked dow there i saw something black move round the corner.. only me adam and talor knows so should we tell any1 to be on the safe side and i was gonna see if i could get a camra there over night would that be good or do you think we should stay away from it or stay away and get the council or someone to fill it up with concrete???? and there is a little tunnel bit that leads to the magazine which is a big rock thing that people go on at the park. you cant get inside it but we was thinking maybe when we get the hole big enougth then we could go and look?? do you think we should go down there at least with our mum or dads and maybe someone from the council because nowone els knows they just think it is cemented up still and what do you think????

Hi Trevor - I'm an Aussie whose Great Great Grandfather, William Howting, was born in Sheerness in 1847 and came to Australia sometime before 1870. I've just started doing family history research, which resulted in contact with another of William's descendants and she has kindly given me loads of information, including the fact that when she was growing up in Sheerness she was told that William's father, George, helped build the Ship on Shore, so I'm thrilled to have found your website with all the wonderful paintings and photos. To be honest, I knew nothing about Sheerness/Sheppey until very recently but now I'm eagerly checking out all I can find! Apparently my late father ran a shop there (probably called Oasis stores?) from 1961 until about 1966. What a great site to see old photos of sheppey.I was born and lived in Queenbourough untill 1971 when my family imigrated to Australia,I remember the steam trains, the horrible chemo smell in queenborough.Anyone remember the Sheldrick family.I have not been able to get back as yet but hope to soon.Keep up the good photos, as they have brought back quite a lot of memories.

My aunt was the Methodist Minister at the church in Minster in the late fifties. I remember the old railway track leading out of town, just the stones roadbed no rails, must have gone when Beeching closed the railways. She lived in a rather gloomy victorian Manse nearby. My other aunt had a caravan at Eastchurch where we would stay during summer holidays, we'd walk along the cliff top to Leysdown stopping at a cottage for fizzy red pop with icecream in it. P.

I can remember being taken on a school trip from the Sheerness Technical School for Boys when the prior ferry bridge was being built and writing my name in the wet cement of the left hand tower when coming onto the island. Thank you for this website, it is a lighted path into a past that has been dark for a very long time. Born at 63 Harps Avenue in Minster in 1948, and every day of my teenage life rode my bicycle from Minister through Halfway into Sheerness for school. I worked as most of us did, as a teenage waitress in Leysdown for many years. I earned enough to leave and at seventeen sailed away from London to New Zealand. Never far from a memory, my love for Sheppey has never faded. For better or for worse, everything I am today has it's roots in Sheppey. My ashes will be scattered there, for in the end I am Sheppey and Sheppey is who I am.

This is a reply to David. If the days at Sheerness Technical School were the worst of your life, you must have had the pleasure of knowing the Headmaster Mr Barnett. I was at that school in the early to mid 60's. I had a dream to follow my grandfather to sea, and got an interview at a college in London to train. He forbade me to go, but I went anyway and got the place. Then the SOB expelled me in front of the whole school. It was the most traumatic experience of my young life. One of my greatest regrets is not realizing that I could leave anyway and telling him to stuff it! Never mind. It was a great school and there are good photos of it on this site. Graham

My Dad was born and bred on the Isle of Sheppey.He met my Mum there and married there and had my eldest brother there before moving to Australia. You could never get Sheppey out of his blood and his heart. I have visited there three times but it meant a lot more to me the last time I visited in 2006 when we scattered some of his ashes in the sea over there. It was like we were taking him home.

Congratulations on the site. I lived on Sheppey (Marian Avemue, Minster) from 1960 to 1977 and enclose some pictures that may be of interest to you. The three school photographs are my class at Halfway School in three succesive years 1964 to 1966. The picture of Marian Avenue looking towards Scrapsgate Road dates from around 1961. The picture of me on the bridge would be from around 1964 and shows the link from Marian Avenue to the footpath leading to Sheerness East. The Scrapsgate Road picture was taken on a short visit in 1981 and shows the open fields before the big house building project.

Griffiths File. If I put a date on the cards I send to Trevor, it is the date of posting usually, so could be well earlier. Unless I know the date, mum aged 3 for example which would be 1911. Griffiths postcards were still in circulation after the war 1945 onwards.

I moved to Warden Bay in the 70's, then to Sheerness and all my kids went to school there. The Harty church, the kids on the beaches, all my friends, christmas, new years day at the clock, Woodys the nightclub, Warden bay hotel. I moved off the island in 1989 and the photos just remind me of the wonderful times from when I lived and worked on the island. I'm now thinking of moving back.

Sheppey was my home for 31 years: born in Denis Terrace Minster (opposite a tiny chapel I recall) and resident in Abbey View Drive till I married and moved away in 1978. Can anyone remember the Sheerness Technical High School for Boys - the worst days of my life looking back, but evenso what a super education we were given there. My Dad built many houses on the Island: the mist over the marshes can't erase completely such good memories of my childhood and early adult life.

Well I was supposed to be cleaning the house to day, but I stumbled upon this fantastic site and I have been rivieted to my seat all day, and I mean all day, I have looked at every picture they are fantastic keep it up, I wish I had some photos to offer you, I loved the leysdown photos and was surprised at there once being a picturdrome in queenborough, I would be curious to know who the people are in the little boat on the pleasure beach at leysdown, the man is wearing a white cap to one side of his head and they are in a boat marked number 2, as think these people are my grandparents, I also remember the stage 3 night club in leysdown and I also remember the bus station when it was converted into a pub, I wonder if there are any pictures of that about, and I would love to see a picture of the old cinama that was in wood street sheerness, I tried to find pictures before but have never had any joy. I have had a great mornig looking at all these great pictures and I will check back for any updates. Thankyou from Kelly.

leysdown is a lovely easy family holiday and fits the pocket but i think the police station should be open 24 hrs a day because of growing crime and im afraid sadly is the norm in our scary society police presence would make people feel a bit more at ease do you agree?

I bought my chalet in 1988 in Leysdown, and always consider it my second home. Seeing your pictures of the past makes it very interesting our Sheppey has changed over the years. Even in the short amount of time I have had the chalet, I have seen changes, including Leysdown church being pulled down, new houses and flats going up, new roads and bridge. So much changes over 17 years.

Do you have any pictures of the Really nasty snow storm that hit in the mid-late 80's that caused the island to be snowed in and the army having to airlift food over the swale. And of the Hurricane that left a swathe of destruction through out most of kent.. I keep trying to tell people that the snow we get these days is nothing like when i was a kid and they dont believe me.

Fantastic pictures, I was born in Minster hospital and lived there till I was 15, though I only moved to Maidstone which is 25 miles away! Some of my family still live on the island and my sister is buried at Half Way Cemetry, while my brother is buried in the old cemetry near the Abbey in Minster. I am now retraining and studying to teach English as a foreign language, and have been looking for a picture of my old school Holy Trinity in sheerness (the school has been demolished and is now a car park - though the church still stands). I went to school in about 1953, and then went onto the grammar school in Sittingbourne in 1964. Fantastic pictures, brings back wonderful memories - but life is not the same there now, most of the areas I played in have been built on though the 'Bunny bank' at the Glen is still there, and we still go blackberrying every autumn. Hi Trevor, I was born in Sheerness in 1943. I came across your great pictures while looking for some of the flood in 1952. I am writting stories of my childhood in Sheerness to be passed down to future generations by my Granddaughter Hannah Webb. I have not found pictures of the flood yet, but did find one of the old steam engins my family used to ride to Sittingbourne on. I have lived in the USA for 42 years now, and the last 32 in Ohio. I must record my memories so that future generations will know ' There once was an English woman' and will know how it was in post WWII in Sheerness. Hi, I really like your photo's. I have lots of old ones stashed away somewhere. Must get them out and share them. I was born in Sheerness and came to Australia in 1962. I was 10 years old. My Dad used to work at the Sheerness Dockyards which I think is Bluetown. I lived in Halfway Road, Sheerness and was born in our house. My name is Susan (Duff). Would anyone have a picture of the Holy trinity School in Sheerness? It's not there anymore, just a big carpark now. It was right beside the Holy Trinity Church. My Mum often talks about the "Flood". I was just 2 years old at the time. I am so glad that the old "wreck" is still there. What would we do without it? Thankyou Ron Graham for posting me a link to this web site. I'll check back often.

Thank you for these photos, a wonderful trip down memory lane for me. Lived in Raneleigh Road in the early 50's before migrating to Australia. Can clearly remember the floods of 1953 although I was 6 years old.

Hello I'm french and one of my friends owns a boat called "Sheppey Queen" for 5 years. It must be about 60 years old. She's really in love with it and I think you couldn't make anybody happier than if you knew stories about its previous life.... And any old picture would be the greatest present. hi I am David Lister I used to live in Sheerness about 10 years ago my familys still live in sheerness well now I moved in Sunderland with my wife and I always goto Sheerness every two years summer see familys I see that everything changing in Isle of sheppey it look like the Isle of sheppey getting improvement I like your pictures it looook great excellent :) I am looking forward again to see Isle of Sheppey in 2006 NEW Bridge hope not too scary :(

Left Sheerness in the mid seventees been back several times to see family still living there. After seeing your pictures might be time for another visit home. Brought back some wonderful memories. Wow, what a great gallery of photos. My great great grandfather, Thomas Gardler, left Minster in 1853 and came to the states by way of North Carolina, then on to Alabama and then to Mississippi where he enlisted in the Confederate Army and fought in the American Civil War. He was captured by the Union army on 29 April 1863 at a battle in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After he signed the oath of allegiance to the United States on May 3, 1863, he returned to Minster to live until September of 1870 when he departed again for the United States. This time to Philadlephia, Pennsylvania where he started a family. I have discovered so many things about my family history over the years but your pictures have given me a visual aspect of where my family were born and raised. Thanks for posting these pictures!!! I know I've been in touch with you Trev but, having finally got through all those photos, it just makes me realise just how good Sheppey used to be. I was raised in the rough grounds of Blue Town and had an eventful childhood. I even remember managing to walk along Blue Town pier during the freeze of '63 after my mother forbid me to go out in the cold. The photos bring it all back. It brings me closer to home from my abode here in Bavaria. Thanks for a great site and lots of memories. Keep up the good work. Al Wilkinson

I grew up in Sheerness in the late 70's/early 80's and even then it maintained some of its older character. I spent some of the best years of my life playing in the fairground and splashing around in the paddling pool. It is such a shame that Sheerness has lost its charm, many happy memories looking through the pictures though. Thanks for making these pictures available to see, my mum and my nan are going to have a field day looking through them. Thanks again!

I want to thank you for posting these pictures on the web. I was born in Sheerness in 1972 and I moved to the states when I was 3 months old. I am now 32 and have traveled to Sheerness many times to visit my Nan and Aunts. My last trip was during Christmas 2004. I will be returning in 2005. Sheerness is my home away from home and it's the place I go to to get away from it all. Your pictures help with my "home sickness" in between trips. Thanks for making these pictures available on the web.

We lived in Minster and remember when the train didn't stop at the Sheerness station, and almost ended up on the beach.I looked for s picture of an old watering hole in Minster. The Kings Arms. I think I got pretty close when I looked at the picture of Minster Hill.

I am writing to say thank you for such lovely memories of the Isle of Sheppey. Our school looks at their local area and as the children are only 6-7 years old photos are the easiest way for them to see the changes,many landmarks are still with us today,like the town clock,so the children are able to identify areas fairly quickly.Also I hope it will spark some of them to continue,maybe later in life,to delve into this islands colourful past.I myself have lived on the island nearly all my life and looking through the photos have brought back some happy memories,gosh I feel old!!

Thank you very much for sharing your now huge collection of Sheppey pictures, what a treat for the ex-pats. Your first postcard of the old Hippodrome shows where I grew up No. 46 the Broadway. I was most interested to see the photos from the top of the clock. I hadn't realised that Sheerness was being gentrified. Sort of like putting lipstick on a pig but its a goog start. I'll have to find that book you mentioned, "Time on Sheppey". With your gallery and the IOS SC webcam I am really able to feel in touch. Once again thanks for sharing your collection.

A lot of old photos of the Island are entitled "An Unknown Paradise". How right they were. I've always said how great it would be to have a time machine just for Sheppey, I guess your site is as close to that as we can get. Thanks very much, it's brilliant.

I was so pleased to see your Gallery. Both my grandparents lived in Sheerness, and I had so many trips and holidays there from 1935 onwards, from Gillingham. Once across the Bridge, or a voyage in the paddle steamer from Chatham, that was the way to freedom !!

Some nice shots that brought back some memories! I worked in Sheppey for over a year in 1980 when the new sea wall was built at Beach Road. This was just after some serious floods took place and was part of the raising of the Thames Flood Defences that took place all along the Essex, Kent coasts downstream of the Thames Barrier.
