Readers of Cahill's How the Irish Saved Civilization are familiar with the wanderings of the Irish monks toward the second half of the first millennium. Legends are the echos of history, and legend has it that Columbine and Gallus holed up in this cave while wandering from Ireland to northern Italy. Gallus became ill and insisted on staying; Columbine continued on his journey. Gallus later moved a little further east and established a hermitage at what is now St.Gallen.
