Mont Castre, near la Haye, is the site of an ancient Roman fort, a Celtic grave gallery, and modern recreation facilities. In June 1944, its prominent location also meant that it was the scene of severe fighting. Over 8000 Americans and many more Germans lost their lives in the fight for this position commanding the valley below. The village church was never repaired and stands as a reminder of those who fought on both sides.
