The northwestern corner of Normandy is a penninsula. Cherbourg is the main port on the north shore. After the D-Day invasion, the American army was given the task of quickly cutting off this thumb to gain control of that vital harbor to replace the temporary setup at Arromanches-les-Bains. This move was followed by a dash north and Patton's race to get around the German Seventh Army.
