Altimeter says I'm 9450 feet above sea level

Utah Highway 31, east of Fairview

When I drive from Renton (Seattle area) to Moab I usually take US 6 from Spanish Fork (Utah)
to Thistle, Soldier Summit, Price and Green River. In October 2006 I tried something different:
rather than going east at Thistle on US 6 I went south to Fairview, then east to Huntington
and Price. In Fairview I set the altimeter (6033 feet or 1839 meters) so I could monitor my
elevation progress as I drove eastward on Utah Highway 31. About eight miles east of Fairview
I went over an unnamed pass whose posted elevation is 9655 feet (2943m). At the pass it was
cold and snowing. My altimeter's reading at the pass was off by 200 feet; the cold, dense
air probably forced the altimeter to register lower than expected.

Yes, I was high, but I also got high while reclining on sandstone.
The instrument was fun to have when driving across Nevada on my way home. I crossed the state on U.S. Highway 50 ("The loneliest road in America"), which was a roller coaster: across a flat basin, then over a mountain range to the next basin, and so on, all day. The altimeter was sitting in front of the car's gauges, where I could observe it easily. As I ascended to a pass or descended from it, I could see the altimeter's needle move!

A nice instrument, of course I do not need one in southern England, a tape measure would suffice. A lot of the places I visit are below sea level.

In other words it's just as we all suspected. You're high.
