My car sits alone, about 900 feet (270m) below. In the "large" photo it's just a tiny black spot on
the road, just left of the picture's center vertical line. The "original" photo shows it better. The
Donner-Reed wagon train of the 1800s passed through the mud flats in this view, traveling from middle
right to upper left, heading for what is now called Donner-Reed Pass, which is out of view behind the
darker mountains. The tragic story of that group seems incomprehensible to modern-day travelers who
can drive to Floating Island with relative ease and hike to its summit without hardship.
