American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

This photo was taken during the 2005 EagleFest at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The Kestrel was injured and in captivity.

hi your photos are beautiful. I think I had a kestrel in sitting on a low branch of the rose bush the other day ... your photo was so helpful. thanks

One Kestrel hawk landed on a fence 25" from where I was sitting in my hot tub at 6:45 AM today. What puzzled me was the fence is only 6' tall, and there are branches of a small tree only 2' above where he landed. I think he was on the ground on the back side of the fence where the cover of the tree is even lover to the ground. He sat there for several minutes. And flew away over the house to my left where a walnut trees branches again give little space for flight. He returned in a few minutes to perch on an Elm's dead stump of a branch at 25' off of the ground. I am in Baltimore Maryland suburbs.

I live in Baltimore city and this morning my wife and I, just witness this beautiful bird swoop down and preyed upon an unknowingly peiogon. survival of the fittest at its best.
