Birds in Maryland

I started seriously photographing wild birds during 2005 as a stimulating retirement pastime. The Birds in Maryland gallery has quickly grown to a current 176 different species. A few of the photos were actually taken in VA and DE but all of these birds are occasionally seen in Maryland. I know that I have a long way to go but it is a good start. Nonetheless, it is a constant and rewarding challenge coupled with the immeasurable enjoyment one can only find in the world of nature. One never knows what they might see over the next hill, on the next lake or pond or in the nearby field or forest. And then you hope that the subject fully cooperates in conjunction with your photographic skills. Good luck !!!

Hello I live I. Greenbelt Mx and trees are in rapid decline all around us due to housing developments. Boo... as a result I see a lot of different bird species I’ve never seen before. I’m glad to have them they serenade me all day and in The wee hours as well. Keep the pics coming. I’ve been feeding birds all my life! Save the trees... we were meant to live together as one

Great pics and bird ID! I keep seeing a bird that to me appears to be a cross of a male cardinal and a scarlet tanager. There's no crown on the head, but the wings have both red and black, not quite as much as the tanager though. I think there's a small tuft of black hair around the neck. It doesn't stay long enough to get a better ID. Looks like some sort of varigated cardinal. Any idea what it could be? Haven't found a pic that is quite right yet. thanks

Wonderful collection of photos--thank you for sharing it! A friend was telling me about large flocks of birds migrating right now that he saw over Rural Retreat Lake in southwest VA. He said they were a little larger than a sparrow, gray above, white undersides, flying over the lake and swooping and skimming a little above the lake--some were landing and sitting on the water for a short time. I cannot think what they would be! He said they have square-ended tails. Do you have any guesses to the ID of these birds? Thank you!

Thank you for these wonderful photos. Miss seeing my favorite Ospreys. The nests I watch are along 695 across from old Beth Steel and out near Perryman on Chelsea Rd on high tower. There is also a Bald Eagle in the both areas.

I found a baby sparrow chipping or swamp not sure,it has all its feathers and is about to fly. I've have had it for two days now and it has not eaten. I've tried eggs an fruit with a straw but he wont open his mouth. other than that he seems fine

I saw a very large bird gliding near the patapsco river. Very large wingspan. It looked white with either blue or black on the wings and neck. What is this bird? It is one of the largest I've ever seen!

We have a very small grey bird with a long beak making a nest in a very small birdhouse on our patio. It looks like a hummingbird in size, but flies like a regular bird. It is very; very small, and I don't see anything like it on your website. Any idea what it might be. Thank you.

Hi there. I golf at many courses in Maryland. Yesterday I saw the biggest bird I've seen - about 3 times the size of a hawk - I thought it was a brown eagle maybe?? Can anyone help? It has a wing span of say 6 feet or so. Thanks Pat

Has anyone ever seen a tan Heron? Saw one today at Wilde lake, Columbia. Not as big as the Great BLue. I ddin't know there are tan herons but it was definitely tan and definitely a heron.

Hi, I just joined from Laurel, MD. I have a few feeders in the backyard. I'm in a suburban area, but the house backs to a wooded area. Anyway, I've been able to identify all the birds at the feeders until today. There was a whole flock of them; black birds with bright, orange beaks. They look like common blackbirds from Australia. Are they common to Maryland? Thanks, Tom.

Hi, We have a bird nesting in one our bird houses in Havre de Grace and cannot find it in your photos. My husband said it was almost as large as a Blue Jay, has a bright yellow band in front and around to the back of the neck and has a deep, bright blue back. What is this?

Charlie, I love your photos! I just got an Olympus SZ-14 and have been taking digital photos of a cardinal who likes to pose and a blue jay who laughs at my efforts. I've finally been able to identify the sparrows and the pigeons are most cooperative. One of these days I hope that just one of my shots can be as good as yours.

Delightful! Today I spied two very fluffy multi colored small birds that I had never seen before. They were pastel green down the back of the head then mixed with grey, a pale rose at the throat with white beneath They were perched very high in a bush that reached to the 2nd floor. i have never seen anything like them and my Audobon book doesn't help either. Any ideas. The illusion was a fluffy ball of rose, green and white. Beautiful Anna

During the summer, the dry swamp-like area at the intersection of Bensville Road and 228/Berry Road filled up after several heavy rains and turned into a sort of marshland. And these big, beautiful, white birds came there and stayed for a couple of weeks. It was such a site that people were pulling over and taking pictures. Unfortunately, I only managed to get a few glances whenever I was stopped at the light. Do you have a picture of those birds, or know what type of bird they were? They favor the blue heron or snowy egret that you have posted here on this lovely site.

I think the small bird you are referring to is a pine siskin. They are currently migrating through this area and are about the size of hummingbirds.

~Okay, I have a problem. I am trying to identify a tiny brown bird that sadly died in my backyard. So far, I have gone through at least 5 sites trying to identify it and none have had it. ~It is a small spotted brown bird with a white belly, some yellow feathers at the wings and it has a brown-ish beak and legs.

I think I identified a bird that has come to my DC yard this year - Hermit Thrush. It is not at all solitary - hangs out with sparrow at my largest birdbath. Do you think this is possible? I have three birdbaths and have had herds of birds so that I must refill the birdbaths two, three even five times one particularly hot week. Your pictures are lovely.

Your pictures are beautiful .thanks It's Aug 25 in Dunkirk I have several black and brown birds I've never seen before hogging my feeders with a cowbird. Appear to be young. Been here 33 years and was bird watching before that. They are very mixed up looking. About the size of a Nuthatch. They're back, 3 of them one cowbird. Dark wings, lighter breasts and necks. Light heads. They keep the feeder swinging, chasing off other birds. Are they cowbird young ( I doubt) or is there a possibility of cross breed or is there some bird I don't know in this area?

A very sweet little bird, very animated and loves to eat. I was setting up my camera near a suet feeder and a little nuthatch landed in the tree about 15 inches from my head. He just sat there until I was done and then jumped on the feeder when I moved away. I have been using a remote with my camera so I can get closer to the birds. Pretty good results so far.

To Backyard Watcher, I'm pretty sure that what you saw was a Cooper's Hawk. I've changed the image of the Cooper's Hawk. The new photo is that of an adult Cooper's Hawk. The previous image was a juvenile Cooper's. Also similar to the Cooper's Hawk is the Sharp-shinned Hawk, but smaller in size. They both are frequent visitors to the backyard, especially if you have a bird feeder.

We moved from an apartment downtown that had no view (seriously, all the windows were blocked by the roof of the building next door) to a house in Towson and put up a feeder first thing! I work from home and spend many a happy hour staring out my office window watching the avian neighbors (between the chickadees, the pair of cardinals, the sparrows, and the grackles, the feeder gets a ton of traffic). I think I saw a magpie last week in baltimore, maryland. Very pretty bird, black with a white belly and white under the wings. I was told by a bird watcher that it probably was not, but it sure does look like the pictures I've seen of magpies. I'm not a bird watcher, but it grabbed my eye.

I saw a bird today in Lusby Maryland (southern Maryland). It was about the size of a Morning Dove, but it had a set of longer tail feathers. It also had a Blue Spot (I think it was blue, maybe yellow?) on the back of his neck. Any ideas of what he was?

You have a beautiful collection. We live at the northernmost point of the North East River. We were on the beach in March 2012 and spotted four bald eagles in the leafless trees. One of them swooped down and got a fish so large that he could not lift it out of the water. He had to drag it through the water to land where he was joined by another eagle to feast. Unfortunately no photos were taken.

Wonderful pictures! I live in North Beach, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. I have several bird feeders in my back yard and have seen many of these birds visiting them. Also see many of the waterfowl birds on and around the Bay. I love nature and get many hours of enjoyment watching the birds. Can't wait for the Finches to return. Already have seen the Eastern Bluebirds checking out the nestbox in my backyard. They nested there last year; hope they decide to do so again!

This past summer I was looking at my hummingbird feeder and saw what I thought to be a very small humming bird. The more I looked the more I questioned what it really was. I mentioned this to my brother in Ohio(a dedicated bird watcher) and he told me that what I saw was a Humming Bird Moth. I had never heard of this type moth. The things one learns from birdwatching makes the time spent more valuable.

I had trouble figuring out what it was until I came across a picture of an immature red-tailed hawk. I think that is what was near our house. Try looking for a picture of one and see if it looks like the birds you saw.

I just saw a golden finch in my backyard as I was heading to work. I have 2 acres I figure it must have a nest somewhere back there. At first I thought is was an Oriole but it was an intense yellow color and not orange. What a BEAUTIFUL and COLORFUL bird. I live in PG County Fort Washington MD.

We live in Reisterstown , Maryland and have watched at least 3 ( seems to be a family ) of unidentifiable hawks for the past three weeks. They have a distinct high pitched squeal. I have assumed they were juveniles since they stay in close proximity to one another. They have brown wings and a white belly. their "collars" have light brown highlighted by vertical dark brown "stripes". They are beautiful and I have tried photographing them but my camera is not great and I can't seem to get close enough before they take flight. None of the species I've seen while researching resemble them at all. Will try to photograph. Any guesses?

I live in the Woodlawn/Catonsville area and saw on Sunday afternoon July 31 a white/grey-ish type bird that looked big like a hawk with a huge wing span but with the head of an owl. it swooped down very quickly i guess thinking a white piece of trash it tried to pick up was a meal, but it just sat there on the grass looking like the size of a large cat. Then it flew into the woods then came back around and perched right on my roof edge. What is it?

A couple of times now we have seen a largely bright red bird and its less colorful mate at our feeder. The male has a grayish blue head. The body is very bright red- redder than a cardinal - while the wings are a slightly less intense red. We were not able to find any pictures that match it in our bird books or on the web. What a terrific site! So helpful. I'm an older landscaper and have seen lots and lots of critters..Shared a yard with a fox one day. Last week I rescued a bird from a screened in porch that had a gotten a large hole in the screening. When I first saw it I opened the screen door and went to the other side of the yard to quietly work hoping that the bird would find the way out. He wound up flapping so hard that he was hanging off of the screen head and tail down in an arch. Thought that he was a goner so I decided to go in. I was able to gently catch him and let him out. He paused and flew away. He was a smidge smaller than a robin and not as plump. He was light brown on his back and was speckled underneath tan, yellow and black. Any thoughts on ID? Thanks!

I'm in Ferndale(Glen Burnie) and trying to ID a bird we saw outside Home Depot this morning - looked kinda like a partridge (dove sized), with a red neck(cape?), a black bib, and was yellow underneath when it spread it's wings(but had a brown belly)...He(she?) was walking in the grass but took off quickly when we circled back to see him closer. Charlie, your pictures are marvelous! out in poolesville MD this morning, i saw a medium-sized passerine body-type bird perched on the fence wire that i'm unable to identify. only saw the back, but s/he was dark brown or black, with a rust-colored cap on the head, and a white stripe down the back that did not extend up onto the wings like it was wearing a white vest. when it flew off, wings appeared to be slightly pointed and were the same dark black/brown color as the tail. any ideas?

I saw the most magnificant bird by Kohls off rt 103 in Ellicott City MD. It was large -like an owl or hawk 12-20 inches by px 8 inches in width....and it had an orange chest and brown tan speckled wings. I saw it on low branches on bushes near the road and after I parked the car, I walked around and just admired it for a while..it let me get within 20 ft of it. After shopping I saw it was still there...truly the most beautiful bird I have ever seen. can you identify it?

David, I think it is rather rare for a bird to eat a butterfly. They will, however, feast on the caterpillar. Birds like warblers, bluebirds, etc. love the worms that they find under the leaves.

I am trying to identify a bird that I have seen in Frederick MD in the woods. Can you give me any ideas? We have several feeding from a basic feeder in our yard. They are small, not too fat, with a sort of longish beak (for their size), black head, blue wings and back, white breast. I have seen them, standing upside-down, pecking at the tree bark. That hawk ripe my bird in pieces (Small Parrot). I had this bird for 21/2year as a pet, just open the cage to feed him and forgot to close the cage. As I open the door to leave it flew right throught the door on a branch in less than a minute out of no wear this hawk came full speed and scoop up my birdie.):

My first real experience with flora and fauna was as a cat-sitter in a mansion on a hill in San Clemente, CA abutting Camp Pendleton. My instructions were six pages single-spaced. They had extensive gardens with hundred of drip feeders. Any broken twig was repotted! Bird seed was bought in huge bags, and a handfull strewn on the ground morning and evening. Several hanging feeders with varied sugar mixtures! A fishpond with a half dozen large koi that I manged to kill off in six weeks, despite professional help and extreme measures. A multilevel waterfall provided bathing facilities for several bird species. I recorded and identified about two dozen species and was hooked. Am still an ancient amaateur who enjoys the ocean, many local parks and water sites. Nature provides the perfect tranquillizer. I'm only 87, and every new day with my Mickey Mouse camera is a bonus. I can't even lift those professional monsters, but I travel vicariously on PBASE. It provides multiple views in all seasons that no money could buy. Life is good. Never mind about the question on the combined Hummingbird/Oriole feeder, I now understand you need different feeders and nectar. I was told it is difficult to attract Orioles, but that there was still time to try for hummingbirds. I have had a feeder out for three days and the only thing that has found it is an ant that was trapped in the water moat. I am going to try to find a plant with red flowers to put by it to see if that will help.

Thank you for the wonderful photographs, they have made identifying birds much easier! I now have two feeders in my back yard in Derwood (near Rockville), a Squirrel Buster Plus filled with hulled sunflower seeds hanging from a pole on my deck and a tube finch feeder filled with Niger seed (thistle) hanging from a tree limb. Having solved my squirrel problem I have an endless stream of gold and purple finches, cardinals, etc. I had never seen a Blue Jay in this area, but now I have a pair feeding as well. My biggest thrill was seeing a woodpecker twice up close - I am still trying to identify which it is. One tip - in hot weather put out shallow containers of water (no more than 2" deep), you will attract more birds than a feeder! They need to drink and bathe, especially when it it 100 degrees. Does anyone have a recommendation for a feeder that will attract both hummingbirds and orioles that is relatively squirrel proof? I would like to try to attract both.

I love to sit on the back porch with my Westie and watch the various types of birds and thanks to your picture gallery I can identify some the birds. The Carolina Chickadee is my absolute favorite! What a personality!!! I have Doves, Robins, Orioles, Cardinals, Red bellied Woodpecker that goes to town on the trees. and I saw my first Hummingbird. I purchased feeders as well and hope to attract more beautiful birds. The squirrels and chipmunks are funny to watch as well. I believe I've had my question answered: According to Andrew Dolby, a University of Mary Washington associate professor of biology and a bird specialist, the robin is leucistic, having a lack of pigment in some of its cells that results in the white feathers. It is not the same thing as albinism, and does not affect the bird's health, but it can pose additional dangers to the individual bird because it is so readily spotted by potential predators. According to Dolby, leucism affects one in thousands of birds, and occurs across species.

While visiting my daughter in the Leonardtown/Lexington Park area of Maryland we saw a bird that reminded us of a robin by the way it searched for food and bobbed across the yeard. It was similar in size to a robin, but it had a white head and neck, gray back (like a robin), a rusty breast (a bit more brown that a robin), and there was some speckling in the white around the throat. Any idea what it is; or could it be a mutation?

I'm not sure but I believe I have some type of baby owl in my yard. I do have alot of trees for hiding or nesting but I am concerned because the black birds and blue birds seems to go after this little (owl). It does not appear to be the standard brown and black owl (I have had the privilage of handling an injured one in past.) I dont seem to be able to locate the different types we may have here on the shore.

Carolina chickadees are so cute and pretty, they fly away fast after grabbing some food. Saw a humming bird only in May this year. Love watching the birds in the bird bath.

We are fortunate this year and have a pairs of sparrows and Wrens nesting at eye level in two of our trees. The kids love to watch them build and care for their nests. The sparrows placed plastic over the opening of their nest like a little awning to keep out the rain. Pictures to follow.

Last week a Pileated Woodpecker flew into the glass door of the patio to my son's apartment in a fairly urban area of Rockville. Fortunately, it was only stunned and while quite vocal within a half an hour was able to fly off and presumably meet up with its mate which was also in the vicinity-- but not before my son was able to photgraph it!. Since setting up feeders in my own small yard about two years ago, I have noticed a definite increase in the number nad variety of birds in the area and have documented 26 different species for a certaintainty including our very own resident Cooper's Hawk.

This is to the Guest that asked about bird identification. First, do you have a photograph ? Second, do you have a "good" bird book ? Absent a photograph it is difficult to validate identification to others. Some birders do identify the specie, sight unseen, by its voice. I would also recommend joining a local birding organization where you can exchange information with more qualified birders. Overall, my philosophy is that if I didn't photograph it, I didn't see it ! I like proof .......

Hi, Charlie. Great pix. I came here to see if you got any pictures of the white pelicans that have moved into Blackwater Wildlife Refuge off Route 50 near Cambridge, Maryland. We saw them the Saturday before Easter, about 24 of them with the breeding 'bump' on their upper mandibles. Quite impressive.

I would guess that you are talking about the 'Killdeer' who will often feign injury and try to get you to follow her away from the nesting site. She makes a terrible nest if that's what you want to call it. I often see the nests in parking lots, driveways (non-paved) which have to be blocked off so no one drives over the nest.

Wildest thing just happened. I took a left on to Ivy lane from Route 201 down here in Greenbelt. Sitting square in the middle of the two-lane road was a pair of hawks. They didn't move when I pulled up, so I thought one of them was injured. I rolled down the window and pulled up beside them. They were about five feet away. One of them flew up to a branch and the other one stayed. I said "What are you doin', Hawk?" Then that one flew away. I came to your website and, based on your pictures, I think they're Coopers Hawks because they both had light eyes. The strange thing is that they sat there while I pulled up.

First let me say that my two young sons and I love looking up birds on your web-site. Yesterday we were at a wooded location near the Upper Gunpowder. My 6 year old son came across a yellow and black feather. Onside is black while the reverse is yellow. The tip is all black with one edge of the feather alternating black and faded yellow. We noticed that the Orchard Oriole and possibly the American Goldfinch could have left this treasure behind. Any thoughts about possibilities?

I have been looking for a site to help me to identify 3 hawks or falcons that have been regular visitors in the woods behind my Gaithersburg townhouse, especially since I put out bird feeders this past winter. Today I witnessed one gracefully glide in & skilfully pick off a Starling from the suet feeder. I believe it to be a Red Shoulder Hawk based on your beautiful photo.

In reference to your "magpie" sighting, the bird is actually an escaped African Pied Crow. I photographed him back in 2007 and he has been sighted numerous times recently. I just added a photo of him in the "Miscellaneous Photography" gallery. I also have a photo of him which shows the hook on his leg. Actually I was just looking for him at Southwest Area Park in Baltimore Highlands last week. He has been seen numerous times in the vicinity of Hammonds Lane.

Just saw a red tail hawk in the top of a tree on hammonds lane. It was driving the crows crazy. Also have seen what I think is a magpie with a group of about 30-50 crows in the ballfield on hammonds lane.

My husband and I moved to an area just north of the Isle of Wight in Worcester County. We are on a small island surrounded by wetlands. I am using your pictures to begin a log of our beautiful birds. Beautiful pics, though I did not find the bird I saw today in my yard. It was the size of the oriole with similar breast, however it had a patch of red behind it's head and a tuft of white on it's tail noticeable as it took off and flew away. Anyone, any idea??

I have recently started birding, and today I saw two new types of birds in my backyard that I was unable to identify from my Birds of MD and DE field guide. From your pictures; I'm certain that one of them was the "gray catbird. The other though, I am still not certain. It is a very small all brown bird that has nested in a bird house my son made in boyscouts. It is a very songful bird; and not much larger than a hummingbird. It's body style reminds me of a finch. I do have goldfinches and house finches. I live in Allegany County. Again, thank you for sharing your absolutely beautiful pictures.

It's funny but I've recognized the Rose Breasted Grosbeak as well as many views of your site. I've never saw one untill last week when a flock of about 6 came to my feeder it was an amazing site to see so many of them and for the first time as well.

i have a picture of a beautiful bird i took this morning we thought it was a seagull then we thought it was a duck it has an orangeous red beak it was feeding on mussels off and on for a couple of hours but ill describe it moreits head is black,he has a fat body that is brown and white and the legs werent yellow not sure what color it wasoh and the beak was slim and pointy

Today I saw a bird in my backyard. It had a gray body but when it opened it's wings and flew away it was bright blue and black underneath. It was about 8-10 inches tall. It had a short beak like an eagle and had a thick body and short feet. Anyone know what this bird could be? It was beautiful!

Great pictures and effort.... I saw a beautiful and unusual bird in the Catoctin Mountains last week and would like to know if anyone knows what it was. Description - Size and shape maybe of an average to large Finch? Body coloring similar shades and markings as a male, Flicker, but no reds. Its tail feathers had a very distinctive wide and bright yellow band across the trailing egde. Very, very sharp and pretty....

Tom (who commented about the Blad Eagle flying in front of his car on 295). There are a pair of Bald Eagles who have a nest right next to 295, just after you go under 695 going into the city. To the left of 295 there is a creek/river/swampy area. If you were standing looking at the water, the nest is high in the trees on the right side, maybe 100 yards or so off of 295. I used to see them every day on my way to work. The first time I saw one of them, it was sitting no more than 50 feet from 295 on an old dead tree that is jutting up out of the water. Absolutely amazing.

I figured out, with help from a friend, that our little yellow bird is a young Goldfinch. This is the time of year when parents shove the young out of the nest, and sure enough when I Googled "young goldfinch", back came a picture of our bird! So he's just looking for a new nest and think our rancher looks comfy. I put some seed and water on the window ledge for him til he "finds himself". Thanks for the great site and beautiful pics!!! Lovely pictures! I came to your site to try to identify a robin size bird that is completely dark brown with no other color whatsoever on it. At first I thought it had a nest and was trying to draw my dogs away since it flew low and landed several times and they ran right to it, but then I wondered if it is a juvenile of a large species and not great at flight yet. I spent one night in Rocky Gap State Park - last week. In the evening I spotted an orange bird in a nearby tree and later on a walk around the lake spotted this bird again. It was a bright orange, wings and body with an orange beak - larger than a robin, no crest and a black on face / ?ring around head. Hoping for some help....came home from work yesterday and there was a bird in my yard that I've never seen before. Its about the size of a wild turkey, maybe a little smaller. The body is all black and the head and halfway down the neck is black and white speckled. The beak (2 1/2 -3 incles)and feet are a pale yellowy color (kind of the color of Mountain Dew). It had a very large wing span when it flew. I live in Laurel, if that helps any. I believe there is also a second one as well. Any ideas......??

I came to your great site to try to identify a ground dwelling bird I saw the other day when cutting a neighbors field with my tractor. The hole I found in the ground was about 1.5" in diameter and the 2-3" tiny bird could not fly very well. It was either a newborn or not a great flyer. No luck Identifiying with any pictures yet. I did see a turkey vulture on the ground in the same area for the last two days. Could this be a baby, living in the ground under high grass?

I hope someone can help me with this....I work on base at Ft Meade, while driving the other day I spotted a dog barking at a tree, when I looked over I saw 2 woodpeckers, they were around 2 feet in length, had a rather large body and from what I could see did not have any red on them what so ever, They were much lrger then a crow, hawk, etc.....but smaller then a vulture, does anyone have a clue as to what type they are? If I can I am going to watch for them again and take a picture....wish me luck on finding them again...............

I had a hawk..he looked like the Coopers but was more brown..sitting on my porch railing this past Monday morning. He was like a foot tall or taller...by the time I got my camera which was sitting close by the door he looked at me peeking out the curtain and flew off..I've seen him twice..last Nov. eating something that WAS alive..sitting on the clothes line! Today I had 2 tiny little Titmouses (Titmice?) feeding. I have tons of Mourning Doves (I've counted 14 at a time), Blue Jays, Cardinals (one I call Spike as his head looks like Bart Simpson's hair!) , Starlings, Mocking birds, Sparrows, some Yellow Finches, Robins, an occasional Woodpecker, nasty HUGE crows, numerous squirrels, a giant rabbit and the cutest chipmunk in the world! While walking my dog in Bethesda, Maryland this early afternoon a hawk flew over us very low at full speed. A few minutes later I heard an scandal of Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) yelling, then I saw a group of Grackles chasing out another hawk off their tree. They all flew very fast by us. I heard Grackles yelling all around the neighborhood. I saw about five minutes later another Grackles flying alone towards their tree at full speed. About twenty minutes later we walked near the tree again, and the Grackles were still yelling very loud. I have never seen this before, and thought that you may like to know it.

Great WebSite. I searched "Wildbirds of Maryland" and you popped up. I was looking for a bluish grey bird with crested fealthers on its head. It has been hanging around my feeders. I believe it is a Tufted Titmouse? Thanks! Yvette, From Street, MD

Hoping someone can help me. Saw a hawk with spotted wings and back in our area. He/she was sitting low in the trees and being agitated by other birds. It also dropped to the ground and appeared to be eating something off the ground. Thought maybe it was other birds' eggs or chicks. Possible that it is a juvenile but would like to know what type of hawk. This took place in the Lake Shore/Pasadena area.

I think I saw the same bird with the bright orange beak here in Chevy Chase! He was a soft brown color and had a spiky mohawk.

Does a female Red Tail Hawk have a red tail? I am almost positive that this is the bird behind my house nesting but it does not look like she has a red tail. Will this weather kill her babies? Thank you. Jackie

Such a beautiful site that you have created. I have been feeding the birds for about 3 years out of bird feeders but the squirrels have dominated ever since and I rarely had birds. UNTIL........I bought some corn to feed the squirrels in hopes that the squirrels would eat the corn and the birds would come to the feeders. Well.......I have a ton of birds eating the corn off of the ground with the squirrels. I have also spotted a Red Tail Hawk with a nest of babies. I was able to identify it due to your pictures. Now I want to turn my back yard into a sanctuary. The beauty of watching and identifying these birds with your pictures is AWESOME. Thank you so much.

These are beautiful pictures. I was hoping someone could help me identify a bird I saw in Ocean City. My family vacations there and we wondering what it was. To look at it, it appears to be a black bird. But, it has patches of bright reddish orange under its wings. Does anyone have any idea what it may be?

In my back yard there is a bird that makes a sound like a slow drip faucet into a full sink of water i.e. dew-wop! (sorry, best I can do!). I have never been able to see it and to say the least it's so intriguing it's driving me nuts. Any ideas?? I read that Starlings can mimick sounds, but where in the world could they get this from?
