York County, PA was always a hotbed for baseball especially in the 1940's and 1950's. Every baseball player has good and bad memories. But on this day, back in 1961, I had a good day in striking out 17 opposing hitters in a nine inning game. As a skinny left-hander, I had a pretty decent fastball and curve with excellent control. To this day, I get irritated with professional players making millions of dollars and can't even throw a strike when they need to.
I might point out that in the opposing lineup was a gentleman by the name of Curly Holtzapple. When Brooks Robinson was playing for the York White Roses in 1955, he played second base while Curly played shortstop. Thus, a then second baseman ultimately became one of the greatest third baseman in baseball history.
Probably nobody else, but me, remembers this game. But I had a lot of these "feel good" moments during my baseball years. I could have used Tommy John surgery back then but he wasn't around .....
