16th September 2005 - dimming of the day

There is no place I’m happier than here. This is the remains of the engine house that the army blasted to bits in their target practice sometime in the last fifty or sixty years or so. It’s next to Holman’s but I can’t remember its name at the moment. This sunset was what welcomed me home to Cornwall.

After we’d finished work today, we scurried off to do our laundry at the launderette and then home as fast as we could so we could take the dogs over Caradon for their walk. As the shadows lengthened and the sun’s rays lit the sky with pink, I realised I didn’t need to go ‘home’ to Sandhurst again, this is now my home. I can experience this as many times as nature will allow, it’s no longer rationed by how much I can be here.

For the first time in more than a week, our family has nothing to stop us from being together – no trips, nothing to stop us being all together at all. The dogs have had a taste of a normal day and I have been able to come home and make our supper. The last time I cooked anything it was a TV dinner last Friday night – Linda McCartney pies, peas and potatoes – not much of a meal really. Tonight’s risotto with sundried tomatoes, cheese and mushrooms was a distinct improvement I think and I hope DM felt the same.

He says there is no routine or rhythm when I’m not around. It all goes to pot! I suspect the dogs get fed randomly anywhere between 7pm and midnight while he snacks on crisps and buttered toast , eating nothing more nutritious at any point – in fact, reverting to his diet from before we were together!

Is this just another sunset? No, it’s the dimming of the day. The time when lovers need each other more than any other. The time when we close our doors to the rest of the world and make time for each other.

Last year I was lamenting the loss of Johnny Ramone and two years ago, I was lamenting the loss of Penny from my life....who turned up at Beth's wedding last weekend!

Beautiful view, and it's all yours now! I suspect DM reverts to his bachelor ways, most men do. After my divorce and before Cathi and I got together, I got tired of eating that way and taught myself how to cook. Now, I do most of the cooking when we cook!

I might have mentioned Linda McCartney products in the past,http://www.pbase.com/lindarocks/image/48631403 I've only tried frozen sausages ((buy one, get one free)and wasn't impressed. I've just looked at the website, made by Heinz, are they taking over the World?
