American witchhazel fruit (Hamamelis virginiana)

Charleston Lake area

This is the native species of witch hazel, not to be confused with Hamamelis mollis, the Chinese Witch Hazel. The native one grows south of Ottawa, though there are one or two locations here where the species may be found in tiny numbers.
