Polyphemus moth caterpillar (Antheraea polyphemus), #7757

Marlborough Forest

This tiny caterpillar is an early instar of what will eventually become a very large and striking green caterpillar http://www.pbase.com/image/160949582) and, eventually, an even larger and more striking moth (see inset). The caterpillar has its back to me and its head is bent over the leaf, munching. It was on an American elm.
