Spiny shieldbug (Picromerus bidens)

Larose Forest

This is a large (12-13 mm)stink bug, predatory on tent caterpillars for the most part. It is considered a useful insect in helping control the latter as well as controlling many species of sawfly larvae. It will take other caterpillars too, as the opportunity arises. According to Bug Guide, it is native to the Palaearctic region, but adventive here and spreading.
