Haiku #8: On a bare bough

One of my favourite haiku by the inimitable Basho. There are many translations, but I love this one best. I believe that it was most likely done by R.H. Blyth who had such a feel for haiku, knowing that the feeling evoked by words was more important than being terribly precise. Other translations I've come across include: On a withered branch, A crow is perched, In the autumn evening.

While this is very nice, to my mind it does not provide that sense of capturing a fleeting moment. Haiku should never be too wordy!

On a bare bough,

An old crow -

This autumn eve.

He looks a bit angry... perhaps he didn't like the first translation? Great combination and educational entry for our challenge.

The Haiku - both translations - go so well with your image

I like your choice of translation the most too.
The crow in mono is nice and moody.

This works excellent for the this month, the sense of the haikus only in two colors and dimensions against three lines of words! V.

Good capture. Gives me a feeling of the cold season soon to come.

Perfect capture for the mood of the haiku and a fine image too. I like the translation you used better too. V.
