Pelecinid wasp (Pelecinus polyturator), female

The long whip-like abdomen on this female scares people because it unfortunately looks like a stinger. But, it is not! These wasps don't possess such a thing. They are entirely harmless. Be nice to this wasp if you should see her, because she is a parasite of June Beetle larvae which are found in lawns... which is why you can see these wasps fly up from the grass if you are cutting it!

What an amazingly coincidental posting because I was cutting the grass this afternoon and guess what flew up from the grass?? One of these wasps!! I remember thinking wow, what a wasp, and wondering what it was. Now I know!
