Pelecinid wasp (Pelecinus polyturator), female

This beautiful slender, but large (approx 55 mm) wasp landed in my garden and proceeded to explore the bricks on the patio. She was quite engaged for about 5 minutes, walking across the site. That long ovipositor (5 x the length of the abdomen) is for laying eggs in the grubs (larvae) of June beetles. It is NOT a stinger!!! These wasps cannot sting!

What an unusual and interesting wasp! She is quite beautiful. It would be quite a sight to watch the ovipositor in action with its articulated segments. V

How interesting! It must be one of longest ovipositors (relative to abdomen) of all. Uschi (V)

Une découverte pour moi également, une très belle prise de vue nous montrant bien la longueur de l'insecte et ses particularités! V
