Pelecinid wasp (Pelecinus polyturator) female

Larose Forest. The long whip-like abdomen on this female scares people because it unfortunately looks like a stinger. But, it is not! These wasps don't possess such a thing. They are entirely harmless. Be nice to this wasp if you should see her, because she is a parasite of June Beetle larvae which are found in lawns... which is why you can see these wasps fly up from the grass if you are cutting it!

I found one of these bugs in my house and was terrified of the stinger,,,so glad to read it's not a stinger and she is harmelss :)

She's quite the regal beauty, isn't she? I really love the composition of this photo, how her body is in focus while the abdomen curls up around her. V
