Something Old.jpg

This was my grandfather's camera. Kodak Retina II. How cool would it be to take pictures with this one? But I hear they don't make the film anymore. What a bummer.

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel
1/100s f/5.6 at 28.0mm iso1600 full exif

Ah, you're the person behind the web site I linked to!

That last message was from me.

It's a 35mm camera, and it takes standard film. Cock the shutter with the lever you see at the 3 o'clock position (press down). Open the camera back. Rotate the silver roller with the sprockets to the right. You should then be able to fire the shutter. If this a II, it won't fire unless there is either film in the camera or you move the sprocket that tells the camera there is film in it.

Bad news everyone. The shutter is stuck. Looks like it never released back. I wonder how long it's been stuck like this, so before I do anything I'll have to find someone who can fix it for me. I am so bummed about this. I am also afraid to damage it more.

This is all very fascinating, including this one's history! Just found this link which suggests that modern cartridge 35mm film works. It would be cool to shoot a roll of film of antique material (old cars for example) and sepia them up! I don't know how good your actual camera is, is it in good enough condition to get good photos. May be worth a cheap test film first of all.

One hundred and ninety eight dollars? Back then? waaa. Pretty hefty. My grandfather bought it in Egypt.

Good call David. Kodak's website says this takes 135 film. Maybe not in canisters? The Retina II was sold from 1937 to 1950 and retailed for $198.00. Great photo! Fine close-up.

I asked a camera store, and they said that the film wasn't being made anymore? I was actually thinking of contacting Kodak and asking them. Not sure.

Are you sure you can't get film? The 50mm f2 lens suggests it's a 35mm...

Great shot!! Beautiful detail. I bet this thing could tell some great stories. It's probably seen a lot of gorgeous places and had a lot of incredible photographs run through it. Nice that you have it!! -- angela :)

Yes I was thinking of taking more and posting on a separate gallery. How cool would that be? We could get really close on the details. They don't make them like this anymore, you know?
