於清乾隆年間(1736至1795年)由鄧氏族人所建,是龍躍頭著名的五圍六村之一.
門上紅粉石門額刻有"鬱蔥"二字,寓意春蔥生長茂盛之地,可證該圍原稱"鬱蔥圍".
現時麻笏圍大部分圍牆及四角更樓已遭拆卸,只留下具歷史價值之門樓.門樓於1994年被列為法定古蹟.
