Playing with flash

Another lousy day, with the sky so grey it looks like I had tried to take a picture of it, so I decided to try my hand at the flash. I really want it to get nice out again so I don't have to keep playing with this. I just don't get it. Too close (big white spots)? I screwed up and had the iso at 800 so there is some noise... I could go on. Might have to keep this as an example of what not to do. Along with most of the others in here :)

Probably with the 50mm focal length and the 1.6 X factor of the camera, you were pretty close. You need to eithter diffuse the flash if you have a diffuser for that flash. If not, lower the level either through negative flash compensation or adjusting the flash. If you are using an external flash you can usually tilt the head and then reflect it off of something white (a ceiling, reflector, etc.) It is pretty easy to soften the light with the Rebel and a Canon flash. Play with it some and you will get it. Or use a longer lens and get a little farther away. It does look like you have an external flash so I would pick up a diffuser first. They are cheap, really soften the light, and eliminate that hard shadow.

I also do not see the complaints that you have. Over all it looks good, there are no shadows, the white balanced is spot on. Maybe less flash intesity, or some post process to take the brightness down a bit. Good job!

Are you using a built in flash, or a flash attachment? I don't know much about it, but my understanding is that you'll get much better results with a TTL flash unit, although they can be pricey. Btw - I am looking hard for the errors you've pointed out, but it looks fine to me.

My sister has a figurine like this...or something similiar. I have trouble using a flash, too....it is my worst enemy when it comes to shooting pictures....what to do? what to do? :)
