Laughlin's

333 Franklin St. Buffalo

This was popular with my crowd in the mid to late sixties. It has had various names since then, and it has been an interesting place, particularly the exterior wall murals through the years.

9-21-04 note: after remodeling and considerable investment, this has reopened as Laughlin's Beef and Barrel Restaurant. It has also been repainted.

This place was like a spaceship. When you walked thru that front door it just took off for outer space nary to return till 3:30/4:00 am or thereafter, if ever in my mind👽

Lived at this place in the 60 "s. Drove from Hamburg every night just to be at Laughlin's. The faces flash before me. The names I can still recall. Our gang always had the front window at the end of the bar. Thanks Dave, Susie, Eagan, Pat, Jim you all know who you are. I visited Buffalo last summer and had to drive by Franklin and Tupper. Some of the best times of my life.

25 cent Simon Pures, Iriy's, Schmidt's, sweet smell of weed our on sidewalk, cops didn't hassle too much, nice friendly ladies, etc. the best time

James - are you asking about Ulrich'sl Tavern? Still there and lively w/entertainment. Ray Flynn's on Main St. also became a popular theater crowd handout.

Best bar in buffalo at the time, 1966 - 69. Went there every night, and finally lived across the street from it. Anybody remember Egan? The daytime barkeep would sometimes make sure I had cigs when the guy came to fill the machine. Loved this place! I lived in North Buffalo and hitched a ride with a quarter in my pocket for a draft beer and stayed all night long.

In the mid-1960's I went to Laughlin's and realized there was a bigger world outside of Buffalo because of the interesting group of people who congreated there. One day I saw a guy I used to deliver the Courier Express to when I was a kid. When I collected the money for the paper he was sedate...in Laughlin's he was a different person: friendly, cosmopolitan, almost transcendental. The place had that effect of people: it made it possible for you to remake yourself.

Don't forget Andy Bongiorno, Dave Adowski (sp?) and their run with After Midnight!! Great for cops from pct. 3 and restaurant people, plus right next to the Tudor Lounge

This was The Sanctuary pre-laughlins... by many thought to be the dirtiest kinkiest club around.. had a great time!

Laughlin's has been redone into a gorgeous restaurant and bar. Truly one of the highlights of Allentown
