Looking North from the Vlaming Head Lighthouse you will see “The Lighthouse caravan park”,
foreground this photo, and thirteen VLF (very low frequency) radio towers.
These towers were built in 1967, as part of the “U.S. Naval Communications
Station Harold E. Holt”, to provide radio transmissions with U.S. & Australian Navy ships
and submarines in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean. The tallest tower,
called Tower Zero, is 387m. and stands in the centre of two circles with six towers
evenly spaced in each. The running of the base was handed over to the
Royal Australian Navy some years later, until, in July 2002, RAN
handed the operation of the base to The Defence Material Organisation,
which is part of The Department of Defence. The base is now operated,
under contract, by Boeing Australia Ltd.
Andrew Peacock was appointed President of Boeing Australia Ltd in 2002.
