20051122 Feels like home

Faringdon, England

As a loyal supporter of the Hereford breed of cattle I get upset when hobby farmers (there are few real farmers in the South of England anymore, but that's another story ...) populate their fields with 'rare' breeds particularly Highlands.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Highlands, Galloways, Belted Galloways, Welsh Blacks, Dexters (OK, I just can't take Dexters seriously!!) - they are fine breeds, But it's hardly fair on them to bring them to the soft south with warm winters, hot summers and endless lush grass when they are used to toughing it on sparse grazing on the West coast of Scotland or the hills of Wales.

Nevertheless, I thought this young lady looked quite at home in the frost!

John - we'll all be f'*** hobby farmers soon, well in England anyway? Know what you mean regards the Highland and Dexta cattle? Everyone and their dog seems to have them currently in their 'paddocks'! All well and good - though I do wonder if a lot that now have them truly know how to look after them?

We used to to serve our 'not so good' dairy cows with Hereford years ago but the butchers turned against them. Had a few Limousin's for a while ... psycopaths on speed?? Simmental seem to suit me currently.

On the subject of breeds - have you noticed how much Aberdeen Angus beef there is in the supermarkets?? Flipping country must be overrun with them LOL.

No matter .... whatever the breed, I'm a fan of cattle :)) BTW - like the picture :)

Is the grazing so very sparse in Galloway? Personally I'm always glad to see Highland cattle about Oxfordshire - perhaps because I'm a transplant myself :-)

Interesting points you make her John. I am always charmed by these Highland Cows...even if they are tiptoeing in the frosty grass. Well done image.
