Picture of the week 11

There is an interesting debate that is going on the forum about the whole notion of Picture a Day.

Here I quote, Jeanius, who is a genius in this one regard. I do strongly disagree with referring to other work as "crap."

"Another friend of mine who did PAD for over a year often expressed HIS frustration at having LOTS of GREAT shots on ONE day and then CRAP on another but not wanting to "cheat" he would not post teh extra good shots cause they were not taken on the next day....

Going thru my archives after I stopped photo a day, I found TONS of excellent shots that I ignored, because I had already moved on the the next day's photo.."

This an invaluable point. There are days when I have more than one shot--especially weekend, when I have time to take pictures. So I am going to try something new this week.

1. Every day, try to find a good picture
2. If it doesn't happen, then go to my weekend archive from that week.

My goal is try to take part of my day to do something creative - to exercise the art of seeing..

Joan, I am intrigued by the responses you have received! As Bryan mentions below, I have often "PPAD" - processed a photo a day. I was introduced to PAD as a strict 'must post a photo shot on that particular day' project. As life's circumstances have happened, I have most certainly not posted shots taken on the very day that I post. I don't dig back into my slide archives from years ago, but do go back into my more recent digital files. Sometimes I delight in finding a shot that I totally overlooked, as some other image caught my attention the day I photographed. I tease about 'cheating', but for me, to enjoy the process, to be able to keep up with posting and viewing as much as I can (as we all have busy, crazy lives), processing a new image is still a creative experience for me. And I love seeing other PAD images, whether they were actually shot that day or not. Creativity and sharing is the key for me! ....Stunning display of colors and energy in your photograph!

Amen, I occaisionally work in the office from before sunup to well after sundown, particularly if you consider the commute, so I have frequently PPAD ed as Mindy McNaugher calls it. I still feel I gain alot in evauating my work, occaisionally making those Digital darkroom efforts that take a good picture to a "much better" picture. It also gives me the opportunity to to see what everyone else is doing, what I like and and how I could be doing better. Like this great shot I would have never thought about shotting in this environment before, but this great shot has tweeked my interest. Strict rules are for buearocrats, the intent is for artists. This forum has done more for reviving my srtist spirit than even going digital. Keep it up. Thanks for the oportunity to babble. -BJ

Thanks for all your comments - For me, I am struggling wtih how many hours that I have in day now. So I would like to try to find a picture each day, carry my compact camera with me, but if it doesn't happen becuase the weather or just that I had to leave the house at 6am to go to work and get home at 7 pm.. then, I would like to go to the weekend archive. My goal is to try to be creative evey day. I think doing a year of PaD was the best thing that I did. I would encourage others to do it. However, It got to be fun! So one need to figure out how it works in your life.

This is fabulous and GMV. I think you and Jeanne have a valid point. Post crummy photos or pick good ones from the past. Does it defeat the purpose of a photo a day? I don't know.

Excellent image. As Ansel Adams said, "There are no rules for good pictures, there are only good pictures." There are no official rules with regards to PAD as far as I know and so I think anyone can do with PAD as they see fit. I agree with Karen--and furthermore one learns more from mistakes than sucesses. Not to mention that "crap" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm with ya sista! I posted my two-bits on that thread, and all I know is that PAD has put me in the habit of taking my camera EVERYWHERE with me, and capturing things that I will never forget and was able to share with friends and family. I tried to quit while my camera was busted, but encouragement from PBasers (like you!) kept me going.

Life's too short to worry about whether you're shooting "Crap" or "Not Crap". If you took it, you're happy with it, post it any darn day you want! Rules, schmules..... And I like the color and angle of this shot, for all it's worth :)

I think you have expressed my thoughts on that PAD debate better than I could muster the words.

Let's keep PBase, PADing and photography FUN - there's enough stress and pressure in our working lives as you know better than most, Joan.

I agree with Jeanne's friend and after a year I am going to stop. PaD has been excellent for me in many respects, I never regret doing it for one minute.

I like this picture. The brightly colored storefronts feel busy, as if this is a bustling urban street, yet there are no passers-by in the shot. I really like the way you've captured such a sense of activity in a still scene without people. Very nice.

Very colourful. I like your thoughts on pad-ing. I have gone through the same notions myself, but after I finished my first year last September, I have been giving myself more freedom when it comes to what to post and when.
