Hulne Priory

Founded in 1240 for 24 friars, this is possibly the first Carmelite Priory to be established in England. A tower was added in 1488 by Sir Henry Percy. Following dissolution in 1539 the church was destroyed, and the other buildings are now in ruins. Later, a summerhouse was built and the interior of the tower was remodelled in 1778-9 by Robert Adam and Capability Brown for the Duke of Northumberland. The Priory was used as a location in the Kevin Costner film, ‘Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves'
