Chief-Supt. Douglas Coates of the RCMP was commanding an international police force in Haiti when the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck on January 12, 2010. He was one of the hundreds of thousands who lost his life in the quake; his body was returned to Canada for burial. I had the opportunity to observe the funeral procession along Elgin Street, an impressive and heart-wrenching display of solidarity as members of the RCMP, police and other agencies took part in a solemn march to honour Coates.
