August-29-2004

Driving home today, there was the most amazing moon. It was sitting low on the horizon so it appeared even larger than normal. There are two times when I realize how dynamic the moon truly is...
The first is when I am in no rush at all. 10 years ago, I was camping at the Buttermilks in California. I was lying amongst huge boulders and was in no hurry to sleep. I spent the night following the moon across the sky, watching it rise and set just as the sun does.
The second is when you are actually in a rush, chasing the moon. That would be today. As I was driving down the highway, the moon was peeking out from behind some clouds. I drove quickly, looking for a safe place to stop. When I finally found a park, the moon had crepted behind these clouds, almost taunting me from safe cover. I unholstered my camera anyway and fired off a few shots. A few moments later the moon won, having hidden itself deeper behind the dense clouds.
So, this photo is in honor of our ever-elusive moon. I hope for another day where there is no rush, so I can once again lay amongst boulders and keep company with the moon as an admirer, as opposed to chasing it as a hunter.
