These silver additions maximize the volume by amplifying the sounding bamboo pipes. The additional metal tubes create a second wind tunnel and also work as a second resonator. Actual Sheng versions with higher numbers of pipes (up to 42!) sometimes do not use bamboo anymore and consist completely out of metall.

Heute gibt es sogar Instrumente, die ganz aus Metall bestehen und bis zu 42 Rohre zum Erklingen bringen. Die silbernen Rohre und die Vielfalt der möglichen Akkorde läßt uns das Instrument auch als "Kirchenorgel für die Handtasche" erscheinen.
