This exotic beauty is not easy to play. It's size of over one meter makes it difficult to hold while playing, the player needs long arms to cover the holes. The sound is rather low compared to other mouthorgans, but it has a special tone colour.

What looks equal to the Lisu "Naw" mouthorgan actually is a smaller version of this instrument by the Hmong people of Thailand. It remains questionable which of these rather analogue instruments happened to be the first one. On the first look, the appear to be the same, but...

... a closer look reveals a slightly bowed shorter mouth piece and a slightly different tuning. The "Naw" is also much louder than this version, which also knows the possibility to bend the tones with the thumb from the lower side.

This Sheng is a student model of a smaller size. Actually most Sheng performers use bigger models with 21 pipes and a longer mouthpiece. There also exist models with keys closing the playing holes. The metallic body does not seem to be authentic for this thousands of years old mouthorgan.

Compared to other mouthorgans in Asia the Sheng is essential for it's structure, age and sound. It is used in ensembles of all kind to produce drone and layer sounds, and like the Khaen it is used in temple ceremonies with ensembles of three or more Sheng playing in chorus. On this boxed version of the instrument we see silver additions to the bamboo pipes. Once this instrument was belonging to the bamboo category, but as it is quite obvious in this and the next picture, nearly half of the instrument actually belong to the metall category now.

These silver additions maximize the volume by amplifying the sounding bamboo pipes. The additional metal tubes create a second wind tunnel and also work as a second resonator. Actual Sheng versions with higher numbers of pipes (up to 42!) sometimes do not use bamboo anymore and consist completely out of metall.
