Compared to other mouthorgans in Asia the Sheng is essential for it's structure, age and sound. It is used in ensembles of all kind to produce drone and layer sounds, and like the Khaen it is used in temple ceremonies with ensembles of three or more Sheng playing in chorus. It also a famous solo instrument.

Durch ihr hohes Alter war die Sheng maßgebend für die Entwicklung anderer Mundorgeln in ganz Asien. Heute wird sie im Sinfonieorchester, in traditionellen Ensembles, in Tempelzeremonien und als Soloinstrument genutzt.
