Under Attack Again

Was wondering why our front walk was strewn with little black pellets. I asked my husband if the lime he had spread the day before was black and he said it was grey. The walk is under a river birch tree. Could be seed. That seed is waferlike and was dropped a couple of months ago. Looked up into the tree and saw made denuded branches and clumps of these creatures.
