If you go to Google Images and search for "paper wasp? you will see several difference types, some with stripes which this one doesn't have. I believe this one is called "polistes metricus". I have not been intimidated by them and we co-exist without battles - I've even had them nesting in my entryway. I actually miss having them there because their parenting skills are fun to watch.
