I love testing how much of a dynamic range I can deal with, and in the case of this image I used a minus 2 exposure value in the camera and then lifted the shadow highlights with Topaz Adjust 5 in Photoshop.

Dynamic range in digital cameras is not very wide and highlights can easily be burnt out just leaving white blobs with no detail. I regularly use minus exposure values if the hdr setting can't handle the range.
