This amphora in the Archaeological Museum in Athens, is from the Dipylon Cemetery in Athens. It was created about 750 BC. and is about 5 feet tall.
Jars like this one were placed over graves and perforated at the bottom so that offereings of wine or oil would seep through.
The surface is decorated in the "geometric style' with meanders and stylized figures of human mourners.
