During our trip to Yellowstone we saw this animal, which was like nothing we had ever seen before and we deemed it a mystery that needed a follow-up with the local Ranger (he wasn't sure), our friends and wildlife enthusiasts (got some good info there) and researching on the net (best spot to go if you have a clue what to look for). We finally figured out that this is a Cross Fox, a colour variation of a Red Fox. Other color variants are the silver fox and black fox. A litter of kits can have all the variants. The cross fox gets its name from the cross on its back, a black stripe that goes from the top of the head to the tail and a second stripe that runs across the shoulders forming a cross.
