January 21, 2005: Happy Birthday Sharon!

Windsor, ON, Canada

It was Sharon's birthday today. Since it was so cold outside (-14C), we celebrated inside.

Her birthday present from her greatest admirer (me) was a Canon 440EX flash for her Digital Rebel.

The outfit is new - we saw it in a lingerie store today and had to grab it because, interestingly enough, her birth year is (19)69.

Sharon, A belated Happy Birthday! Hope you have a Truly Happy Birthday Every Year that comes by!!. Next time I am in Ontario I have to meet you guys. :-)
Great work Ray... this one really takes the cake for creative control and lighting ingenuity.
Only a Canon lens and cmos ccd can deliver a masterpiece like this. Skin tones in all your pix are superb... The Model,Man,Machine & software -- all need to be applauded!!!
2 thumbs up

Nice idea, near perfect exposure given the conditions, interesting post-processing (as described below), and of course, a lovely model. The resulting image is a good one, and hope the birthday was, too.

As for you Ray, this image is fantastic the best so far.

Almost forgot, Sharon, you did great job staying perfectly still for 2 seconds.

Wow, that's an impressive post process you have there.
I really stared at it and cannot tell where the seams are. Very nice job!

Two Johns? LOL. Thanks for the positive comments.

I think I took about 8-10 shots of this particular scene.

This one was my favorite and is actually a composite of three images layered on top of each other, each the same image with the exposure slightly bumped up (I shoot RAW for creative control). In the original capture, the upper half of the frame was a lot darker because of the light falloff (it's only candlelight afterall). By overlapping images of higher exposure, I used a soft brush to "erase the darkness" in the upper two thirds of the frame. I suppose I could have used a gradient on the layer mask for each of the two top layers, but the effect would have been the same.

It worked out very well for me. :)

Very good candlelight photography Ray, … the 2-second exposure with the aperture of f8 is right on the money giving a nice depth of field! Of course, the lil’ camera’s brain did all the figuring for you in the AV mode. LOL! I’m not bustin’ your chops, if there had been AV modes on my cameras when I learned to do this I would have used it too. I wasted a lot of film learning this technique. Happy Belated Birthday Sharon! I hope it was a good one for you! Stay warm guys, that’s why I live in Florida. Very high 60’s and sunny sky here yesterday.
