I used to live here, many years ago. The Ecology Carting Corp, the garage of a mob-run private sanitation company was right across the street. It eventually became The Greene Street Cafe, where I couldn't afford to eat. One morning I woke up in my fifth-floor totally unimproved loft and people were painting a mirror mural of the building facade on the blank wall across the street. Big Apple Studio, where John Lennon and Phil Ochs recorded, was in the basement. I met them both and many others. The artist Marisol Escobar was my downstairs neighbor, and the Mabu Mimes lived upstairs as a commune. I furnished my home by picking stuff up off the street. There used to be such great trash in New York City. I don't go to SoHo much anymore; I prefer to leave the memories of my totally-broke start in adult life unsullied.
