Meanwhile, on the other side of the lake…

…I found this poor little guy, all alone on an island frequented by ducks (and people). He looked so lost, pacing back and forth on the edge of the water. I don’t know what great blue heron chicks look like, but I could imagine they look like this. Maybe he was the baby of one of the herons in the previous/below picture? Although I don’t think they could see him from that distance. I even called City Wildlife to see what they thought, and they said he probably can’t fly, and that maybe his mother was waiting for the island to clear out before she came and retrieved him.

And then there were two, maybe three? posted earlier:

Good find and image Helen. I think it looks more like a young Green Heron.

He looks lost, but such nice detail in its downy feathers.

good catch...it seems to lack a blue's long neck....could it be a green heron chick?

What an adorable shot, Helen. He does look very vulnerable at this stage, and unable to fly makes it more precarious. Hopefully an adult came by soon to care for him. VV

Superb sharp shot of the chick. Its feathers/hairs are literally standing on end, and it looks nervous / worried. Hope all goes well for it. V

Outstanding. Since there aren't a lot of animal predators in DC, odds are that he will be reunited with his mom. He looks really young to be by himself. Great spotting.
