The owner of this house recently caused a stir due to the bizarre paint job, with people stopping to stare and asking what in the world they were thinking. I’ve heard some say it looks like a “condiment” house in mustard and catsup colors, that it’s reminiscent of the McDonald’s clown, that it's a great landmark for rideshare drivers, or that it’s an attempt to honor the Washington Commanders football team, whose colors are burgundy and gold (and quite different from these hues).

This part of Capitol Hill is a historic district, with exterior/structural renovations and construction (theoretically including painting) requiring approval from the Capitol Hill Restoration Society as well as the city. I ran into the owner’s son on the street the other day, and he said his mother wanted something “bright,” so that’s what she got. He also said she was a big Commanders fan, so maybe that entered into the choice of color as well.
