The Shamrock opened for business as the smaller Exchange Hotel in 1854 and was completely rebuilt in much larger form in 1864. The hotel was recognized with national significance to Australia in 1978 when it was added to the Register of the National Estate and is also listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. I had mistakenly identified it as the “Shane Hotel” on my photograph, but from what I can tell it’s never been called that. If the internet had existed then, I could have verified it at the time, but unfortunately it didn’t.
