In view are the old Parliament House directly in front of it; the National Gallery of Australia to the right on the lake; and Anzac Parade leading to the Australian War Memorial across the water. Mount Ainslie rises in the distance.
*****
Construction on a new parliament building started in 1981 and was completed in 1988, shortly after we left Australia. It was opened on May 9 of that year by Queen Elizabeth II. The principal design of the structure is based on the shape of two boomerangs and is topped by an 81-meter (266 ft) flagpole, which was visible from the park across from our house.
